need to buy some padded under shorts. dont want lycra, but need something with a good amount of padding.
any idea's greatly appreciated.

Alpkit merino padded undershorts are good. Much less sweaty than lycra, comfortable and decent padding. I bought them for bikepacking because you can wear merino for a couple of consecutive days without it stinking. No downsides that I've discovered yet.
Don't forget to pay careful attention to any seems in the shorts you may wear over the top!
Also the Vulpine padded boxers that are often reduced on Sportpursuit are nice and comfy, I either wear those or I wear full road/gravel bibs with the shoulder straps and just have baggies over the top (or not) depending on how long I'm riding for/type of riding. I tend to go for decent Castelli 'Endurance' bibs in the sale, pick them up any time they're 50% off on Merlin and they're really good.
I've not found a decent MTB undershort really that offers a good fit/comfort for my body so that's what I've settled on above.
Just bought a pair of Endura EGM 800 series undershorts (basically the same as the Endura Pro SL bib shorts just without the straps)
So far they have been great on 3+ hour rides, the lower leg section was a little loose to begin with but they have now tightened up around my calfs after a few uses
They normally retail at £75, i got mine for £45 in a sale
On the road bike i use Castelli Endurance bibs which are great, not sure if they do an under short version with the same pad
I like my mons royale merino ones. Agreed nicer than lycra

Pretty much, they are the under short version of their bib shorts so the leg extends down to just above the knee
