So it's exam week here, so I've been working hard (really!). Hadn't ridden since Sunday - I'd banned myself from the bike in order to get some work done.

So there I was revising for my two exams the next day at around 3pm, with the knowledge that I had a badminton match to play at 7pm, and I got a phone call. A mate had his tyre blown out in the middle of nowhere, and needed someone to come out and save him.

So of course I'm not going to leave him stranded, and put my kit on, and rode out to where he said he was with a tyre in a figure of 8 on my back, proper old school like. Rode out 13 miles to find he wasn't there. Called him up again, and he'd told me the wrong place. So had to ride another 7 miles to get to where he really was. It was starting to get dark at this point, and very cold. I had planned it so we'd get back just before it got dark, so only had rear lights, and enough layers for me to ride fast without overheating. I realised pretty quickly when he wasn't where he said he was that that was a mistake. Lights and a spare layer next time..

So finally found him after 20 miles, (should have only had to ride about 7 miles to get to him), and we got the tyre on. Unfortunately he didn't get it seated right and we had to stop a little while later so we could do it again.

So we finally got going, chain ganging it down main roads at night, trying to get back home as quick as possible. We eventually turned off the main roads to come back into the city a slightly more quiet way, although country lanes in the pitch black is not that fun.

Ended up back home at 5:45pm, cold and tired, having ridden about 35 miles (instead of about 15..). Got some food in me, and made my match. And my two exams the next day.

Wondering if this karma thing really will balance its self out, I could do with something nice about now. However I'm pretty sure unplanned rescue miles count triple with regards to training. And it was a lovely evening ๐Ÿ˜€

You went the extra mile to help out a mate, karma points are surely on the way.Or you might get killed by a block of frozen toilet water falling from the sky at any minute, lifes funny like that.

I would have driven to pick him up or drop off tyre so I could carry on with what I was doing

Karma is one of those funny things though eh. If you believe in it, it goes in both directions. Good and bad.

You've bragged about it so the karma is diluted and you'll fail your exams

Well I am glad some people will lend a hand! Last Sunday I had a puncture a couple of miles from where we had left the car so rather than faff the other guys rode onto fetch the car. I carried on walking on the road just to keep warm and was passed by 4-5 cyclists of different persuasions none of whom inquired whether I needed any help.Presumably they were not telepaths so did not know help was on its way. If I see somebody walking or stood at the roadside I always at least ask if all is well and occasionally I can lend a tube or a pump.
So much for the Brotherhood of Cyclists.

Life is about the journey, not the destination.

You know you did the right thing and just reliving the story with your mate over the years will be sufficient payback.

Pulled into my local night riding carpark last tuesday and saw 2 riders prepping up noticed they were annoyed so i popped over (plus i was curious about their 2Pure van), turns out the rider had an Ibis demo but the valve had snapped on his inner tube and no spares so i offered up the use of my spare tube so he could complete his ride, he agreed to put the inner tube back under my car when he was finished the ride which he did, he also gave me a fair few Clif energy gels free.

Karma working as it should do, i didn't expect anything back was just helping out a fellow rider. Never caught his name though.

Karma is a bitch! She's got something against me. Every time I help someone, something bad happens to me later on.

I've snapped frames after fixing people's chains before now.

The eyerolling smiley is surely the STW equivalent of this:

I usually go out of my way to help Today whilst out on a ride I saw a rider in Manchester Wheelers kit pushing his bike. I stopped to ask if he was ok and he'd suffered two punctures but only had one tube. I gave him my spare tube and carried on with my ride. Good Karma.

How about the warm glow of doing the right thing and helping out a fellow STWer by giving him his money back?

Obviously there's no such thing as karma, because determinism** rules.

And karma definitely doesn't work if you modify your behaviour as if it might (ie in the hope of a kickback).

But obviously there is such a thing as karma, because if you're the kind of person who helps out your buddies, it's more likely than average that your buddies are too, and it all comes back around.

As for the karmic balance - how do you know you've not already had the balance in advance? (You don't).

** my psychology teacher said to me (paraphrase): "anyone with 2 brain cells can work out the the rules of physics run the universe, determinism wins and your fate is fixed. but that doesn't help you live a better life so ignore it"
