[#3563924]

Morning as above does anyone have one and do they like them, looking at a 20" frame if that makes any difference.

Other suggestions for cheapish 29er frames with a minimum top tube length of 24" are welcome too 😀

Cheers

Yup, got one of the previous generation, like very much. Currently building it up again after parts donation to FS 29er.

It handles brilliantly, really comfortable fit for me (large I think, and I'm 6'4” ish), bugs of tire room and I fit a big tire and a front triple mech with no probs.

It is v v v v stiff however, so if you ride predominantly rocky trails it does get a wee bit tiring.

Cheers, yes that was one of the issues I was worried about as need a bit of a springy frame to take the edge off rougher trails as my back's not the best.
Anyone got suggestions for a steel 29er have been looking at a Niner but they're retailing at £750 ish and is a bit more than I want ot spend on a hardtail as going to be building FS of some description too in the coming month having sold a couple of bikes recently.

Singular Swift? I have one in XL - I preferred it to the Niner.

You might be ok on a Large? anyhow sizes , geo etc is here:

http://www.singularcycles.com/swift.html - £440 for frame, BB insert, clips and forks inc shipping

I've had both versions of the hx1 and the new version is much, much more compliant than the old. I would assumel the same is true of the hx2.

Had the largest size and and it wasn't at all gate like as a result of the dropped top tube, again the hx2 should be similar in this respect.

I have the newer hx1 and it is surprisingly compliant and comfortable... However, I also have a swift and love that too...

I have 4 29ers, all in gate sizes - 21",22",23" & 24" (Fargo).

I like them all and enjoy riding them. If you're a tall chap you just have to get used to the fact that you need a bigger bike. Will it handle like a 16" frame - no - but it'll fit you and make the riding experience better for it.

I'm looking at probably selling my SS 21" Inbred and going for a Kona Honzo which may fit the bill for what you are after although it's not spaced for a front mech.

Sam also has the Buzzard in the pipeline if you want a bit more travel.

Cotic also have the new Solaris which looks nice.

I know, just found the 20" large anthem frame I was building up is a touch to short in the TT for what I'll be using it for so a 29er makes sence, going to be running 3 or 2 X 10 so need a front mech, will have a chat with Sam on monday as to opitions, looking for 100 or 120mm max travel on the forks

I was in the same position a couple of weeks ago and have plumped for the Solaris, as my previous experience with Cotic has been very good. It's £500, but weighs about the same as a Soul ans is in nice 853 and equvalent like the Niner. Good for 80-120mm forks. Remember you tend not to need as much travel for the same feel on a 29er.

loco, don't you just need a bike with a longer top tube rather than a 29er?

Well yes and no, at 6'3" ish a 29er does make sense especially as it will be used for long rides/races 6 hour + (eventually !) so needs to be a good fit and the extra stability and ease of rolling with help with fatigue.
Virtually the whole Loco Racing and Niner/Stans/Ergon UK Loco Tuning team (that's mouthful!) will be running 29ers as well,
Yes I should be rding a Niner I know but wanted the hardtail to be cheapish and the steel 853 is £750 rrp.
Will be stay 26 for the longer travel FS bikes as they don't have to be huge frames as won't be riding them for more than a few hours without stopping.

ah you're with Scott C 🙂

fair enough, it sounds like a 29er would be a good choice for the events you're doing but nothing to do with your height.

No Scott C and the other lads are with me 😉 I'm not racing with them! I'd get comprehensivly owned!
Did mention aesthetics either, looking like I'm riding a kiddies bike on a 26er, then again I'll look like a clown on a 29er HONK HONK 😉

nothing to do with your height.

Not sure I totally agree with that. At 6'4" I felt I was at a disadvantage teetering on top of most 26ers. I feel much more confident on a 29er, particularly on tighter, low speed trails, although it might just be because I'm a bit rubbish at riding.

that's a fundamental benefit of a larger wheel though, not height related.

I suppose so, but psychological or not, the sense of being more in proportion with the bike and a bit more in it, was a whole new experience for me.
