Hi All,
Thinking this time round of going to 2x10 rather than sticking with 3x9. Currently running Sram x9 shifters and rear mech with an XT front mech and 22/34/44 Chainrings
My current "I'm going to need" list is -
10spd Chain
10spd Cassette
10spd Rear Mech
10spd Rear Shifter
Could I get away with setting the limit screws on the front mech to suit 2x10 rather than buying a new one??
I'd like to try to use the 22/34 Chainrings as there is some life left in them but would like to know what sizes other people are running.
Anything else I've missed and that I'm going to need??
Cheers
Carl
What size cassette you looking at?
22, 34 would be pretty low geared on a 26er with a 11-36 10 speed.
I'm running 26, 39 X9 cranks & its a good spread of gears.
It's will work like you imagine just the chain line won't be as good as a proper 2 ring front chainset
As for ring size I use a 36 outer on my 2*10 enduro and it's just about ok for group rides and fine for trail centres
Yeah you don't need a specific front mech for 2x10 (even though Mr Shimano wants to sell you one), adjusting the limits works perfectly well. There's not much difference between running 2x10 and 2x9, so you can always try it without spending loads of money by simply removing your outer ring and setting the limit screws.
However, as above 22 and 34 chainrings might be a bit limiting at the high end, and changing to 10 speed won't make any difference to that unless you change the front rings (the smallest sprocket at the back is still 11t). I run that (2x9, 22+34t front rings) setup and it's never bothered me, but I'll occasionally spin out on a flat / downhill road section and if I was racing I'd probably use a bigger chainring. The best option would probably be something like 24 and 38t front rings, although of course it depends what you're planning to do.
As for chainline issues - I've not had a problem although it depends on your frame. You can always move some of the BB spacers.
I kept running out of gears with a 22/34 setup on 10 speed am now using a 24/38 with a 36-11 cassette!
Carl - i have a new unused set of SLX 10 speed shifter i can do you for £30 if you collect from Hope?
Well it looks like it'll be a tad more expensive than I thought with having to replace the chainrings, so best get saving
Thanks Rob but I'm looking to stay with Sram
