Si, it's going to depend on where you mount the stinger and how much extra chain wrap round the chainring you get. Sure 1 link will be enough but to work out the right length:
1. Fit the stinger.
2. Let all air out of the shock.
3. Chain on big chainring & big sprocket through Stinger but not through rear mech. Don't join the chain
4. Get someone heavy to sit on the bike to bottom the shock: don't tell And I mentioned her name ๐Ÿ˜‰
5. Chain length = minimum length to join plus 1 complete link (2 half llinks).

Sorry if this is a thick question, but how would you go about adding chain links?

I don't really get why you need to as the extra chain wrap keeps the mech in tension and stops it thrashing around, by adding extra links you lose that tension and the stinger won't do what its supposed to do.

OK you might hit a problem with big ring to big ring, but you aren't supposed to do that anyway as its a sure fire way to knacker your drive chain.

From my point of view the stinger is not there to take up extra chain slack, it is there to prevent the chain jumping off the front chainrings.

If you set up the chain so it was just long enough without the Stinger, adding the stinger may result in too short a chain (as the chain takes a slightly longer path from the bottom of the chainring to the rear mech). Guess it depend how high you mount the Stinger. On an elevated chainstay bike you can set the Stinger at the 8 or 9 o'clock position which will result in needing a longer chain. If you mount it at 6 or 7 o'clock you probably won't need a longer chain (but will probably smash teh Stinger to bits).

And the Stinger is for 2 chainrings and a bash so we will be using big (actually middle) big.

Can't believe I've just typed all this about chain lengths... Must get out more.

Is it not meant to take up slack in order to stop the chain jumping around at all? If it didn't take up any slack the chain could still jump from the big (middle) ring to the granny ring couldn't it - which happens to me pretty often.

Was hoping the Stinger would help with this, or is it just for stopping you losing the chain altogether?

there's a brilliant thing you can get that's just come out, takes up the chain slack like nothing else:

its to hold the chain on the front chainring (with more wrap) and stops the rear mech bouncing around more with tension.

If you put more links in, you it will help with the former issue, but not the latter, but big/big will stretch your mech more as the stinger (which should be mounted at around the 7 to 8 o'clock position) makes the path the chain has to travel longer.

As for smashing the stinger up in the 7 o'clock position, thats what the bash is supposed to protect it from, and if you are using a ISCG mount you only get the 7 or 8 o'clock positions.

grumm if you need slack taking up you need something that moves, the stinger - i believe - is fixed.

it stops the chain going all together by increasiung the wrap around the rings.

losing the chain from middle to granny, could be freehub, more likely to be too long a chain. is this a 3 ring set up?

to add link you need to split chain with a chain tool, take an extra link (spares box?) and remake it with the chain tool. ๐Ÿ˜€

2 rings and a bash - don't think the chain is too long but possibly.
