am am I missing something?

Is the bleed nipple open?

Are you sure you have installed the hose correctly and there is nothing blocking it?

By oil I hope you mean DOT fluid....

(Unless something has changed since I last bought Hope brakes).

Leaving that aside is the bleed nipple open with hose on it and a receptacle?

You need to fill Hope brakes from the calliper end. Take the reservoir cap and seal off, fill syringe with fluid, fill from the bleed nipple. This also has the benefit of flushing the system with fresh fluid. Normal procedure is for fluid to piss out of the lever and over the floor.

*Don't do this in the kitchen.

It does take a fair bit of pumping on the brake lever to get the brake fluid through. Pump the lever several times to build up pressure & open bleed nipple with bleed tube in jar of fluid (or non return valve) - close nipple. Ensure resovoir is topped up & repeat. You my need to do this several times & should work if you system is all connected properly.

You can do it from the lever end but it's a pain. I think I may have used a syringe as a vacuum pump in the past to help it get going.
