What do you reckon? I have no idea, just wondering how much lighter my bike would be if I bought a carbon 456 🙂

I'd reckon your Spesh will be over 5lb (2268g+), evn if it's an alloy one. A C456 frame is 1500g, so I reckon you'd be loosing at least 1.7lb.
Of course if someone has the Hardrock weight and I'm way out, please correct me 🙂

your hardtail frame weighs under 5lbs and under 30lbs built up

a steel hardtail frame is ever so slightly over 5lbs but builds up under 30lbs

a full suss frame is of unknown weight and so builds up to ever so slightly over 30lbs

so sayeth STW. amen.

33lb using the 'holding bike, bathroom scales' method for my sons 21" Hardrock with BB7s (160mm F&R), Deore M525/DT Swiss DB/Mav. EN321 wheels, DMR V8 pedals.

Inbred frame is quite a bit over 5lb - 5lb 9oz I weighed mine at IIRC. My 853 Inbred is 1/2 lb lighter (Still over 5lb) and and 853 Rock Lobster another 1/2lb lighter again.....

The whole bike weight about 32lb when it had Tora coil forks, original wheels and v brakes. Now it has Reba, Crests and BB7s I could weigh it again but I have no idea how much of the overall weight the frame is responsible for. Anyway the 456 would be a lot faster, because it is yellow.

Agreed. On that basis alone it's worth it! 😀

Tuckers and Poddys scales have evidently not been calibrated properly/regularly/by an engineer.

nobody told me it was yellow, all weights are null and void.

I still have a year 2000 21" Hardrock and it's Yellow so what do i win?

Used to commute on it in London for a few years and i've never been able to part with it (i only ride 29ers now apart from this bike).

It now lives in my office and is occasionally used for a lunchtime pootle. I treated it to some Trigon Carbon forks a few years back (500g) and a Carbon post (RF Next SL) and i think it weighs in at around 25lbs with pedals. V-brake only (XTR/XT) and basic Crossride UB wheels. It's got over 8000 miles on it and my hope was to get it to 10,000 before retiring it but i can't see that happening.

I'd also say the frame is probably 5lbs + although mine may be lighter as they got quite a bit chunkier in the years after mine.

**cracks knuckles**

Firstly, 'engineers' don't calibrate scales. And to be 100% correct, it's a 'balance' not a scale. I've spent, ohhh, 20 odd years working with calibrated balances right up from ones that weigh 100g accurate to 0.001g to those that weigh 50t+ accurate to 1-2 kilos. Those ones are called 'weighbridges'. I've used belt weighers, weigh hoppers and even weigh loaders on heavy plant. Not one single one of them has ever been calibrated by an engineer. Not one.
A weighbridge for instance is calibrated by 2 blokes with a big truck full of weights and a forklift. Their weights are in turn calibrated by the darkly named 'ministry' or 'weights an measures' (it's hard to get the info as to who exactly they are)
Most labs have a calibrated set of weights that they send off to be checked and them use to daily check their own equipment. I've done it myself. Many times.
So that's cleared that up.

The weights I actually quoted are, of course, weighed on my kitchen scales. I wouldn't say they are bang on perfect, no, but not are they very far out. Certainly no further out than any other weight you'll see on STW and probably more accurate than most.
As you will also see, the weight I mentioned for the Hardrock frame was a pure guess and I invited anyone and everyone to correct me. Which nobody has.

So, I'll stick to my 1.7lb weight saving until someone goes out and strips down an identical Hardrock and slaps the frame weight on here.

I think that's fair, don't you?

🙂

At the risk of sounding like an arse, I'd say definitely worth upgrading to a C456 with that lot - the forks and rims especially would be slightly wasted on a Hardrock.

And probably about 26lbs with the C456 frame

100g accurate to 0.001g

interesting, most of the cheaper commercial 6 place balances ( cheaper being a relative term ), only go up to 5g or so.

what was the need for that much to that accuracy?

5% accuracy? I imagine most things would need more accuracy than that!

I noticed last time I paid in a chunk of cash the bank weighed the notes to verify it. I'd be pretty pissed off if they missed 5%!

PP+1 on the weight too.

Well that's been the plan since I got the wheels and fork.... I've never really found anything to dislike about the Hardrock, it got me round Kielder last year no problem and I've even done some light touring on it..... so I'm in two minds about changing the frame, even though the 456 is such amazing value at £250.

The forks and wheels made a big difference, perhaps a silly question but how much difference would I be likely to notice with the frame change? Apart from the blinding colour of course....

njee - think you read my post wrong.

every 6 place balance i have used can weigh from 5g down to 3mg, with an accuracy of 0.010 mg at 10mg.

getting better than that involves the law of ever diminishing returns.

I just wonder why you need to weigh up to 100 g to 6 place accuracy
