Use Garmin BaseCamp:

Make a new folder, add the 8 references (use the flag icon), tidy up the naming, when done select the folder and from "file" menu choose Export "folder name" and you will have a GPX file.

You can copy this over to the "New Files" folder on your Garmin 800 as you would a route.

Try saving your route with waypoints as a tcx. I think it has worked for my 800 in the past.

Then copy into the \newfiles folder on the 800

thanks for responses. managed to work it out. using bikehike.co.uk created route, added 8x coursepoints (manually/visually placed the OS grid references), saved to .tcx and copied to \newfiles folder on 800. works well.
