I have just fitted some "new to me" forks with a decent length steerer to my hack bike. I have added more spacers than I usually have under the stem to try and alleviate some back pain that I get on this particular bike. What are the main downsides of doing this? It looks a bit pants and I guess climbing may suffer a bit but is there anything else?

The higher the stem, the shorter the reach. Not necessarily a downside though.

Alters the weight distribution, so there is more on the rear. That may make the front slide more / grip less. May make the suspension feel too saggy on the rear and too hard on the front.
Really depends on how much you raised it by. An inch or less will be hard to feel. (so I've heard)
