As above, every time I apply pressure on my brakes (especially the front), they make a noise like a stuck pig. It is driving me crackers and when I am out in the woods, it sounds like some horrible act of animal sacrifice. Horrible vibrations through frame too - feels like it is trying torment my soul.
Any tips on how to sort this? I have tried aligning the brakes properly, but they don't seem that powerful (i.e. making me do an endo). Not sure if brake pads are contaminated. The brake on the front has recently been bled.
Please help - I know it i hardly an 'issue' compared to the Greek national debt, but I feel I will ostracise myself from the mountain bike community on my next visit to a trail centre...
Get the mounts faced first. If they're out you can try as many other solutions as you like and it won't help.
After that, clean the rotors, check or replace the pads and align the caliper.
Oh, and make sure all the rotor and caliper bolts are tight.
If you know so much about stuck pigs and the noise they make id say a noisy brake is the last thing to worry about !!
On a serious note try cleaning your disks with alcohol (no not cider ) works for me !
What brakes are they? What pads (sintered/resin/kevlar)?
A small amount of copper grease on the rear of the pads should solve the problem.
I gave my rotors a good clean with alcohol wipes, seems to have done the trick.
Thanks all for the help above.
I think they are M585 Shimanos - they are attached to dual control levers. I think the pads are sintered.
Will clean discs with some alcohol and checked they are aligned.
get them really wet & muddy. ride a steep down, brake hard.
Usually works for me.
After 3 sets of pads, new discs, bled twice my 585 still squealed like buggery gave in in the end and bought a set of formulas. Can the piston loose compression therefore not applying adequate pressure to the pads, i dont know but it drove me bonkers.Best of look mate youll need it.
sand discs and pads and bed in again. cold wet brakes are worse for it but contamination or polished pads from gentle use is the usual cause I find
As TJ says, sand/wet & dry pads and discs then clean throughly, most likely glazing/polishing. ๐
