My Orbea Rise needs a new front chainring.
Options appear none existent and expensive for the direct mount Shimano EP801 motor. I would prefer to put something steel on but this option doesn’t exist?
The only options appear to be ones made out from expensive cheese from e-thirteen which £75 or a Hope one at £65
Am I missing a cheaper better option (steel preferably)
Thanks
It's just standard direct mount chainring.
Buy a decent one - but you don't need anything fancy.
It's just standard direct mount chainring.
is it though? There are lots of variations/standards of direct mount rings available for different brand motors as far as I can tell
Ideally I’d fit a spider direct mount and then cheap steel rings as they wear out
Burgtec do steel rings, but I’m not sure if they have compatible spiders
It's just standard direct mount chainring.
There's at least half a dozen different direct mount standards.
Does it have Shimano crank arms?
A steel RaceFace for Shimano motors does exist

Does it have Shimano crank arms?
Yes
A steel RaceFace for Shimano motors does exist
That one is for Bosch
Compatibility cranks: crank arms for Bosch Gen4
Chain compatibility: Shimano 12-speed
Get a 4bolt 104bcd spider and fit anything you want?
I've went through this recently. There are amazingly few - I cannot work out why so few options given the large number of Shimano motors that there must be in use.
Like for like is even fewer - the OEM is a 32T and Hope only do 34 and 36.
The latest 25 Rises (which I thought yours was?) have a steel E*13 ring. Mine hasn't done much mileage due to injuries but I'm expecting it to last a lot longer than the previous alu (and I got 1000's of km out of that, although you could almost bend the teeth by hand at the very end). When I looked it should be half the price of the alu one but didn't actually seem available to buy.
The other option is to buy a Shimano spider and use a separate chainring which gives you more (and cheaper) options in the future but will cost you just as much now as you'll also need a new chainguide as the spider will not clear the e*13 one fitted. I can't remember the details but I think I saw a suggestion that it may be cheapest to buy the lowest priced spider+ring option you can find and replace with the chainring you actually need/want.
Found it -
Shimano Spider for 53mm chainline: Y1VY00020. (note that there seem to be two parts - some are 55mm chainline and people report being sent the wrong one)
FSA Spider for 53mm chainline: CR1770 (Manufacturer Part # 380-0455000050)
https://ethirteen.uk/products/e-spec-bcd104-spider?variant=47469539262781 (but *of course* it's out of stock)
as for chainrings
Wolftooth sells 104BCD,32 T, Drop-Stop ST (for Shimano12 speed)
RaceFace sells 104BCD, 32T for Shimano 12 speed
Replace the stock chain guideas it won't work with the spiders above.
Funn Zippa Lite ES Chain Guide
One-UP E-Bike STEPS/EP8 Chain Guide
Nukeproof Shimano Steps Chain Guide
Thanks b33k34 - yes mine is a 2025 LT
I didnt realise stock is a steel setup. Odd that its worn so quickly with only 1500km. But I had to put a new chain on over the weekend, and the new chain was making a crunching type noise, and under load failing to release the chain smoothly from the chainring.
I have already ditched the chain guide. That just appear to be a device that 'lubed' the chain and front chainring with solid mud !
However, the steel direct mount now seems to be in stock at £29

Check your ring with a magnet? I was surprised they'd changed it on a bike where they're trying to keep weight down. It might vary by model or even what they had available.
Interestingly while on the e bike forum people were trying to get shimano spiders for a 53mm chainline, the E*13s are spec at 55mm

Argh - see my "half a dozen different standards" comment earlier
Thanks again Ive ordered 2 of those steel e-thirteen chainrings.
32T does appear rare. I know it will wear quicker, but I think 34 would be too big on really steep climbs, also I imagine it would potentially put it at risk of rock strikes.
This is why I am not a fan of bikes these days, so many different 'standards' make it hard for customers and shops to stock anything!
Wow just had amazing service from e-thirteen. I put a comment in my order just asking if these would fit, and 5 mins later Ive had a call from e-thirteen to confirm what will and wont fit. Pleased to say the ones above will. It looks like older Orbea Rises are more problematic than the current one though

unfortunately not as it was a telephone conversation. The bloke was very helpful though, does sound like the older rise is slightly more complicated
Drop them an email?
