ok - I would like to up the preload a touch on the spring - I'm really not used to long travel FS and feel that a little more stiffness would be good...

but - it is really stiff - don't want to move it if it shouldn't be moved!!! how can I wind up the spring a bit without doing something badly wrong?

change the spring for a heavier one.
or
up the pro pedal
and add some bottom out boost.
this should stop the shock form "wallowing" and feeling like it has 7 or 8 inches of travel when it sounds like you want it to have 2 inches

Assuming you've not go too much pre-load already wound on, you should be able to use a bottom bracket tool to add more turns to the pre-load collar. This collar should have notches around it's circumference much like an external BB cup. You should check how many full turns is the recommended maximum but something tells me it's not more than six?

Everything that Greeble said though will effectively stiffen up the shock a little and provide you with the outcome it sounds like you're looking for. Pre-load is generally used for setting the correct amount of sag within a given spring rate; it shouldn't be used to compensate for an incorrect spring rate.

Exactly right.

Assuming that the sag is already right then don't touch the preload.

You need to play around with the boost valve pressure/compression damping (propedal) and reservoir volume to get more 'stiffness' (assuming that means 'less wallowy') though I found that my air DHX was always a bit wallowy regardless of the settings.

that's interesting...

it always feels like there is too much sag, but the advice always says "lots" - 30%ish...

how will I know if the spring has already one or two turns on it - I couldn't see a guage?

I'll increase the pressure in the reservoir a little and see what happens there...

Undo the preload collar so that the spring's loose on the shock and then do the collar up again until it just takes up the slack. that's no preload. IIRC the recommendation is that you don't use more than three full turns of preload and use a harder spring if you need to.
