The little fella has an mx20 with small block 8s which have been great this summer. On today's wet, rooty rocky grit stone ride they were less than prime. What is there out there?
Have a look at the Schwalbe range. That's what we used when our two were on small wheels.

I was gonna say Small Block 8, that's what MiniMonkey v1.0 has been using over summer and they've been ace.
Following though, she may also need some more grip over winter (though tbh with our sticky clay mud I might put the slicks back on and stick to the skatepark anyway)

Eldest has been on vee crown gems. I don't think he's quite ready for steep rocky and rooty just yet. They have performed well. And held up to many miles going round the block. I'm not sure how that'll last as he's learnt to skid
Schwalbe Rocket Ron’s are a great choice, Smart Sams if less off-road focus is needed
As a general all around tyre my kids have had Maxxis Maxx Daddy tyres on their 16” and 20” bikes. They’re currently riding 20 x 2.6” Vee Crown Gem tyres at about 15psi. They grip well, roll well and really flatten out the rough ground they ride over.
They’re ride mainly trail centres (FOD and Haldon) and some of the rooty woods around us in Devon. They’re getting pretty quick on the tame DH stuff we also ride and the tyres are really helping.
Schwalbe Black Jack do the job nicely
Black Jacks here. But I'd also say my kids didn't last very long on 20" wheels before they moved up to 24s where there are plenty more choices.
