Dickhead riding a bike runs a red light.
When people talk about "running" red lights I assume they mean cycling through traffic lights at junctions, not pedestrian crossings. I regularly "run" traffic lights if there's nothing about but this was effectively just riding down (a close miss) a pedestrian who assumed he was safe with the lights in his favour.

Typical arsehole bike courier against typical arrogance of a tall suit trying to make a point and make him brake, clearly saw him coming, just two arseholes clashing heads. Normal pedestrian would have just stopped, avoided a near miss and shouted dickhead at him, no sympathy for him but the bike courier wants locking up, they're like boy racers relying on everyone else being good drivers.

I knew someone like that. Former cycle courier and quite excitable. Saw him doing something illegal on a bike once so shouted some abuse at him. Brakes got slammed on and he turned round to respond aggressively before recognising me and laughing. Pretty certain if I had been some stranger instead of an occasional riding partner it would have been fight time.

Whilst some idiots would use it in their campaign to blame cyclists for everything overall it really doesnt say much of interest. What would be amazing if somehow there werent some cyclists who were arseholes and occasionally got caught. Personally I prefer the arseholes to be cyclists since generally that means they are less dangerous than the same idiot in a car.
I dislike the term cyclist as it puts us STW types in the same category as Monsieur Bellend in the video. He's not a cyclist, he's someone riding a bike, an illegal bike for that matter as he only has one brake, I'm suprised the BBC didn't pick up on that.. "Cyclist, on illegal bike, with no helmet and no hi viz headbutts pedestrian"
Someone riding a bike is a cyclist. Same as someone behind the wheel of an automobile is a driver. It's as simple as that. They can also be a total pricks. It doesn't mean that all cyclists are total pricks. Arguing over semantics doesn't help anyone. It just makes the rest of the world think that a higher proportion of cyclists are pedantic asshats.

This story is also on main page of the BBC news website. Whatever the details of the actual incident, featuring the story is just lazy journalism, playing on the whole ‘all cyclists are a*holes’ populist thing just for a few cheap clicks. Pretty poor really esp of the BBC

I hear you, and agree, I just don't like being tarred with the same brush.. the usual "all you cyclist run red lights", "you cyclists ride of pavements.." etc.. after suffering a particularly bad punishment pass from a guy a work his justification was because "cyclists run red lights.."

Unfortunately someone as stupid as that guy is unlikely to be convinced by using bike rider instead of cyclist.
I would tend to agree with avoiding the use of "cyclist" on occasion eg there have been some cases where someone does a robbery and escapes on a bicycle and the headline is "cyclist robs someone". Which clearly is irrelevant and we dont have all the other headlines saying "car driver robs someone".
Put a brick through his windscreen and leave a note it was because "car drivers run red lights".
An always fun test in the cyclists running red lights is to ask what is the correct response when a light goes to amber. However reasoning with stupid is generally only entertaining as opposed to getting good outcomes.

Stop for red lights, as the law requires. Its that simple.

I was actually referring to pre-internet BBC.
However agree with the rest... it's not just violence though it's anything that sparks negative emotions or creates opposing sides in comments (leading back to negative emotions).

The truth is that before the web, the BBC and other outlets didn't really know what people wanted. The instant feedback in click data prompted them to move away from the bulletin formula of 'here's a funny tortoise' towards what people actually want. Which, increasingly, is stuff about sex, about death, about conflict.
It is changing from offering something new or unexpected, to simply being a mirror for our worst sentiments.

I don't have any actual numbers but that isn't really so important as it is perception that matters in public senitiment.

far more of the no-helmet, red-light running cyclists than I do well behaved ones (on roads)
This is particularly when you see a whole load of people on bikes or BSO's run a red light (or cycle through Asda on FB/YT). I've seen commuter cyclists unable top stop at a red light because of the other "cyclists" so even the ones who want to stop can't. (Obviously I mean safely and I mean inexperienced cyclists)
I've also seen loads of well behaved cyclists lots... except I don't really remember them the same like the rest of the public.
Its sad but I don't think we can take back the word "cyclist" ... and we can't change what people (gen public) remember but we can stop defending nobs and declaim them as being cyclists.

I certainly saw it, but then again the dickhead on the bike was being a dickhead. Running red lights when it's clear is one thing, running them and flying past pedestrians with mm to spare and people are going to take offence. I've had the same happen when walking about town with cars and tbh it's just as annoying, and they are equally unhappy when you hit or kick their car on its way past after they've driven through a red light at you.
In a perfect world, city slicker wouldn't reach out and slap (or "accidentally swing his hand about") the cyclist. But tbh it's perfectly understandable and I hope they catch the nob end of a cyclist for headbutting him. Nothing more than a selfish thug.

I think my point is clicks don't actually measure what people want .. they measure what people click on. Most of us don't actually want to see a mirror of our worse sentiment but we click anyway. (Perhaps we click less ... but I still click stuff then wonder wtf I'm doing ... it's a bit like rubber necking perhaps and we might be driving and ignore it but when you're in stationary traffic and there is nothing else) ???
In other words we don't want to see traffic accidents but we look (click) anyway.
If I applied the same logic then I'd come to the conclusion that people actually WANT traffic accidents because they looked.

He will probably get one sooner or later. Running an attitude like that, one day he will inevitably pick on the wrong guy. There was a guy I new back in school who looked like a typical nerdy, skinny teenager who bullies like to pick on. Except he was as hard as nails. The combination led to some interesting "vigilante" beatings when the bullies had a go.
