I built up a Kenisis Pro6 build using a 54cm frame which seemed the right size for my 5 foot 8" dimensions.
I've ridden the bike a lot now and it just isn't right (for me). The standover is a little too high and the cockpit too long. It's also quite heavy. Now, I know I can shorten stems and upgrade wheels etc... but the weight is the least of my bother, I want something a bit more "throwaroundable" if you get my drift?
I'm about to look at the Planet-X range of frames for something a bit more compact. Any other suggestions, must be frame only and around £400 or less. Must also come with fork and support discs.

Been riding a Planet X Uncle John for a good few years. Great frame for the money. 5ft 11 and ride a 54 with a 100mm stem.
CX frames tend not to be compact as they're designed to be carried on your shoulder, the reason roadies went compact was it gives smaller and therefore stiffer triangles.

As mentioned above, CX frames tend to have a bit of space for you to shoulder the bike. I'm not really sure I'm getting you when you're saying the standover is too high, as I've never worried about standover on a cross bike.
I've a Scott CX bike and it's fairly compact. Which, to be honest does make it difficult to shoulder. It maybe worth you investigating though, as it is quite short. I've had to put a long stem on there to get a reasonable fit for me. It's quite a good bike with good amounts of mud clearance.
Just looked up the geometry charts on your bike and I'm guessing a 51 would be more your fit. 54 looks quite a big frame with a 55.1 top tube.
