Right I've spent hours on Google and its doing my head in so can I ask your advice....
I currently run 50/34 up front with Dura ace rear derailleur with 12-28 Dura cassette on my cross bike, I use the bike for pretty much the same duties as my MTB so know feel i need some easier gears.
Changing front to super compact 48/32 or 46/30 is pretty expensive and the current front end is not very old so trying to avoid that option so that leaves me with the rear.
I have an XT 11-36 cassette so that could save me a few bob but i've just read the Dura shifters might not like it.So what options do i have ?
1. Would a Xt rear mech work and would i need long or medium cage? obviously pending shifter problem
2. Buy road 11-34 cassette and rear mech, again long or medium cage ?

Any thoughts or pointers
thanks

An mtb rear mech and larger cassette is the easiest way to lower gearing.
Exactly which mech you need will depend on how many sprockets you have, is it 9/10/11 or 12 speed?
You will need the input of someone who’s more experienced than me though, i know that older versions of D/A used a different cable pull compared to anything else at that time, and i don’t know if that’s still the case.

If your xt cassette is the same amount of sprockets then it will be fine and your real question is “what mtb mech to work with?” Whatever your exact setup is.

thanks , yeah sorry meant to put its 10 spd, would be great if i could use the XT cassette , would only have to buy derailleur then and i'm sure i would get decent money for my Dura mech and cassette so could be a cost free swap 🙂

I ran a medium cage Ultegra rear mech on a SRAM 11-36 without any issues.

The B screw had to be put in from the wrong side to give clearance on the 36 but it worked.

On the front I had a 46-36 so total difference high-high to low-low wasn't as wide as with a 50-34 and I could get away with all gesr combinations being useable whilst keeping decent chain tension.

Other option is a wolf tooth type mech hanger adaptor and a bigger cassette, but chain length may become an issue for some gear combinations.

Thanks, nowt simple eh, just found an old thread asking basically the same and it seems if i want to run an Xt rear mech it has to be a 9 speed one to work with the 10spd shifters

I've just bought a cross bike for gravel.

I bought a mech extender from sjs cycles. This has let a 10 speed tiagra mech cover a 11-36 cassette. I used it today and it worked brilliantly.

No idea if that would work with a double up front.

I've got a wolftooth tanpan on the way to work with a 10 speed deore cluched rear mech and the 11-48 10 speed cassette.

Mech extender and 11-36, or a grx chainset and front mech

I have grx 30-46 and an 11-36 on a med cage 105 rear, will go to an 11-34 when cassette needs replacing but it's what I had, works fine on r7000 med cage, b screw adjusted

I actually run a 9spd xt mech, on a 10spd cassette, pulled by 10spd D/A bar end shifters.
It works perfectly. Just in case there’s any doubt in your mind.

The other option to get cross compatible shifting is to use a shiftmate pulley. If you can't work out the tables email the question and they'll tell you if one will work.
