i'm not usually one for chain devices, usually stick to triple on most of my builds, but i have decided to try and quieten the set up on Orange Patriot 66. as such the wisdom of the forum would be appreciated!
the bike has been running a more xc build than probably what it was originally designed for, it currently has an rp23 shock in the back giving just over 5 inches of rear travel and a single crown fork up front, this makes it great for the likes of wales etc.
the reason i want to use a chain device is because, as i suspect some of you know, Oranges can be quite noisy on the trail. what i intend to do is run a 22/36 up front, with a race face outer bash/guide ring, i have already done this to see if i like the gears, happy with that, but i was thinking i'd run a lower chain guide to help tension the chain a bit.
the devices i have looked at are the e-13 DRS and the blackspire stinger, has anyone used these? comments on both would be helpful
also if it makes any difference the bike is running XT hollowtech 2 cranks with a 9 speed XTR short cage rear end.
i would run a clutch mech but they are only available in 10 speed and i'd rather not swap over until the chain/cassette/mech etc is dead, it's all currently mint so that won't be for a while!
here's a pic to help

I have had a blackspire stinger on my hardcore hardtail for the last 2 seasons. I run the stinger underneath a Shimano SLX double with bash and it has worked flawlessly for the duration of its use. It was easy to fit and runs very quietly and retains the chain pretty effectively when in the outer ring. Obviously the chain is more secure in my e*thirteen lg1 guide on my enduro bike but I consider the stinger a decent option for double ring set-ups. 🙂
that sounds good then, because i wan't sure if i was gonna like the set up generally i wanted to try the cheaper option, the DRS seems over priced by a country mile to me as do most chain devices, the stinger being only 22 to 30 quid depending on the website you look at seems to be a sensible option. initially i thought it was only for single rings so didn't look at it.
cheers for the reply 😀
I ran a gamut roller, similar to Blackspire on my five for a couple of years util the bearings went. Chain wasnt dropped once and you can use it with a bash guard of your choice. For the price I'd go stinger
just googled the Gamut, £100ish 😮
in all honesty i don't understand why they cost that much, it's not that i don't value the effort of designing and manufacturing but it always seems to be alot for them even if you take out the cost of the bash rings which seem to be around 25-40 quid. bearing in mind the cost of a 44t chainring you'd think bash rings would be alot less aswel.
nice to have another option to look at though, the gamut does i think look nicer but as the Patriot is not my main bike i'm inclined to look for the bargain for it.
🙂
id get a Blackspire- I would have if they werent sold out years ago when i was looking. There was someone on here selling a gamut in the classifieds, looked in good condition. I'd sell you mine (the roller bit) for a £10 but you'd need to buy a new roller for it. What size bash are you after?
i already have the bash ring, the only part i need is the chain device itself, happy to have a used part if it's in good condition, i'll have a look in the for sale section 😀
Jonny I have 2 light Weight Duel tensions for sale.
A heim 2 and a e13 ds (new bearing and roller just installed) both are iscg 05.
Also have a hope 36t bash in black.
Mail me if you want for photos etc
thanks Fozzy but i already have the bash ring but also i need direct mount BB as the frame has no mounts as it's from 2006! i know i could run an iscg adaptor but i tried this last week with a DRS lower and it fowled the chainset inner ring so i defo need a BB mounted version, the problem comes from the BB shell being 73mm, if it was 68 i could play with the spacers.
Crc had a ds for sale super cheap last week. Bb mounted.
Stinger works a treat with a 'proper' 2 ring SLX.
Taking the big ring off a 3 ring crankset and adding a bash doesn't always work as the 2 remaining rings are closer in-board. The 2 ring SLX has both rings more central.
I can be possible to play with the BB spacers but I've had problems doing this.
Gold stinger?

@Fozzy, yeah that's why i was trying a friends set up, either way the one i need is now sold out at the sensible price . . . . DAMN IT!! 😡
@jambon, that's the issue i'm unsure about aswel. i think the e-13 drs BB mounted would work chainline wise, a specific chainset would be better and give a better chainline but i'd rather convert what i have if possible for financial reasons.
in all honesty i'm thinking that £22 on CRC for the stinger is a no brainer and worst case i can send it back if it doesn't fit.
ordered the stinger,
cheers gents 😀
Looking at the Stingers' tech doc's/install guide, 50mm chainline measured from mid-point of the 2 rings is required.
In which case, your middle and inner from the triple will be fine once the stinger is fitted and you keep the two 2.5mm spacers on the DS.
yeah i found the tech docs online and sort of clinched it, looking at the blackspire site it also shows how long they have been making it, which precedes modern duo chainsets so it makes sense that it would fit my set up
Stinger is a great bit of kit. Doesn't do any tensioning mind. It does mean there's less free length of chain though so cuts the flapping a little.
I put a bit of effort into making a quiet 224- filled the swingarm with expanding foam, stuck double layers of velcro along the bottom, and fitted a clutch mech. It now sounds like there's at most 3 spoons in the swingarm.
