Ride anything with plus or fat tires in the wet and cold and after a number of hours convince yourself that for the sake of your bike 'looking good' you're rather ride around with a face-ful'o'$hite, zero-chance of someone being hospitable when you stop mid-ride for somewhere to eat/drink and accepting your saddle and clothing is going to get wrecked after one filthy ride. There's also the joy of reduced component life, conjunctivitis and even better cryptospiridium to look forward to 😉

I thought my (now sold) Minute looked OK...

But the Boardman only 'dresses up' for very wet rides

I know, I know, I've said this before.

I like mudguards because I don't like the taste of emulsified shit on my face, and I'm not particularly keen on getting my clothes sprayed with it either.

But I suppose it's a fashion thing. The bike looks filthy so it looks as if the rider has been doing heroics, and the rider likes to smell like shit after a ride. Maybe even enjoys the taste.
