Having ridden and raced for years, I cannot be without my bikes should I go off to Univesity next year. How do the STW Uni massive store their bikes while there? Halls of residence being the main issue here, in that looking at most of my mates first year places, they're not exactly on the large side..

Cheers

enquire with your chosen uni if they have any large rooms. i go, well went, as i graduated today, to bath university, and for the first years they had some large rooms, which were about three times the size and had a double bed, which were for singl occupancy only. they were only about 5 pounds a month more then the standard rooms and i could comfortably fit 3 bikes in without them getting in the way

at all costs keep it in your room and don't lock it up outside. student area's are hot spots for bike crime.

i propped mine up in the corner of room, another mate took the pedals off, twisted the bars and put it under his bed.

Took the wheels off stock some carboard to the wall and hung it up. Covered it in a blanket and cleaned it relgiously after every ride. This was in halls where the policy was no bikes.

Other people just kept them under the bed.

Try getting in contact with the uni club they'll have some advice. I know some people were creative enough to keep xc and downhill bikes in halls so it is doable.

at lancaster, i had, at times, two bikes (road and mtb) in my box room (on the 4th floor)- it IS possible, behind the bed etc... you just need to be creative! and try not to dribble water and mud about too much! i got a few odd looks hanging all my bike kit out of the kitchen window to dry, washing my bike downstairs and generally wearing too much lycra!

I remeber staying in some more modern halls a while back that had a bike lock-up in the basement. You would need a resident's key to get down there and you could throw as many locks around your pride and joy as you saw fit.

Definitely agree that actually keeping them in your room may be problematic space and accomodation-office policy wise. Best check what the room size is, what the bed type is (you cant get a bike under a cabin bed), what the policy is, is there proper inside locked storage and if you can chat to the mtb club, would be worth doing. Have a look on the university student union web pages, should find links to all the clubs.

aberystwyth have bike shaped cupboards under the stairs of every house. 😀
rad.
not allowed them in the halls though (as jonb says) 🙁 they think some railings on the seafront are sufficient for a 1.5k bike to rust away.
grrrr

depends where you are going?

infact, contact the uni bike clube BEFORE you apply for your accomodation, they will be able to advise as to your best option....

if its aber, go to PJM

Thanks guys, really helpful.

Yeah, I really don't wont to leave a couple of K's worth of bikes just strapped to a railing, eff that!

I've only just got my grades through, so based on those I'm just searching through relevant courses now, but it's of great importance that my bikes can fit in the room along with me. Like I say, no way can I leave them outside.

Cheers.

I went to Brunel where it was a 'no bikes in rooms' policy for halls.

Mate of mine used to store his bike in the room without too much bother - just had to sweet talk the cleaners into keeping quiet.

In my final yr I locked my bike in the 'secure bike shed' which had a padlock of a similar size to that I might put on my suitcase. Needless to say, one night ALL the bikes went from that shed. But they left my bolt cropped D-lock behind.

I reckon you'd be OK with one bike, but two might be pushing it. Generally though you don't get halls through your whole uni time, so once you have to look for accommodation, just make sure you get first dibs on the biggest room.

Oh, and cover your bike up - don't flaunt it too much. Lots of people come & go at uni accommodation (whether halls or rented) and you never know who has spied your pride & joy. The locks on halls of residence rooms are usually breachable with a light shoulder barge.

I just kept mine in my room in halls. We also had a 'secure' bike shed downstairs, key card and coded entry, but I just took it upstairs. Theoretically it wasn't allowed, but no one ever said anything. I used to turbo train in my room loads too, no complaints about noise. Had 3 bikes in there for a while, you just need to be creative with where to put them!

Alternatively, if space allows, buy a bike bag and keep it in that in your room.

Congrats! I graduated from Bath a few years ago.

In my day there were no 'large rooms' - you just stored the bikes in your room as best you could, and locked them up on the parade the morning of the 3 monthly 'inspections'. I managed to get two bikes behind the door of my Wolfson Terrace room for my first year, you knew pretty soon if you were drinking too much beer - you couldn't slip past the half opening door 🙂

Houses in the remaining years were mainly selected on bike storage space ... 😀

Kept mine in my room, cleaned it in my room too 😀 occasionally had to hoover about an inch of dried mud off the carpet.
