I've just got a sunline chainguide and it seems good so far. Has a spring loaded roller bit to prevent it from getting bent on any big hits which I thought was a nice touch. Cheap as well. Only "problem" is that it requires a bash guard to work.

There's no black art to it.

I use

Shimano 11-34 cassette
34t chainring (Unramped, can't remember which brand)-but may change back to a 32t next time for a slightly lower bottom gear for long hills.
DIY Aluminium 'bashring'
Jumpstop + Blackspire Stinger to keep the chain on

Blackspire Badger FR (170mm) cranks
Blackspire Uno Veloce 34t unramped chainring
Shimano E-type bottom bracket
Superstar XCR upper chain device
Shimano XTR medium-cage rear mech with KCNC jockeywheels
Shimano Dura Ace bar-end shifter (my 1x9 is a drop bar monster crosser)
SRAM cassette
Clarks braided cable set

Make sure you get a proper single ring chainring without ramps so the chain doesn't fall off.

I use MRP 1.Xs on a number of bikes. They are excellent.

You'll also need to practice your pushing if you do any 'proper' mtbing, can't beat a granny when it goes steep and long.

jumpstop and BBG bash, survived the rockiness of Coed-y-brenin without the chain coming off, light and completely silent too
