[Closed] Before I shorten my chain, is this the likely issue of jockey/cassette interface

[#10592602]

I'm running a 32 tooth cassette with a short cage ultegra mech and today I noticed quite a bit of rumbling when on the small ring and largest sprocket. Now I know the mech is technically only designed for a 28 however I've used a 32 for years with it with absolutely No issues, so it's not a compatibility issue.

Recently changed my chain, I'm pretty sure I used the same length as the old one, however this is the only change I can thinking that's causes this. It's not the first time I've been out on the bike since fitting it, but it's very rare I'll need the 32 tooth sprocket so may have just not noticed it before.

Had a fiddle with the b screw with no joy, so is it likely to be the chain?

how old is the cassette & how worn was the chain?

Well, if you’ve twiddled the B screw and it’s located correctly on the drop out, see what adding a few links does to the scheme of things.

Other thoughts while I type could be cable related, stretch or slip from the lock nut? Bent mech hanger/drop out? Presumably you haven’t fitted a bigger chain wheel and forgotten? How are the mech’s pivots and spring?

Cassette wasn't new but I'd be surprised if that's the issue. There is no skipping and the jockey is visibly touching the mech. Also, I hardly use the 32 tooth cog so it's in good condition.

Indexing is fine so don't think cable has slipped. Chain wheel is same. It only happens on the small to big combo, big to big there is plenty of space.

Would you not want to remove links rather than add them?

Yes, you are correct and I clearly had brain fade. What angle is the cage arm and jockey wheels to the chain stay when in the 32?

And how old/worn is the small chainring? If that's too worn it'll hang onto the new chain a little, causing the rear mech to "rumble".

Took a link out the chain and all is good in the world again.

Are sram 11 speed quick links reusable? Managed to remove it with a pair of pliers but didn't have a spare so used it again to rejoin.

Good to know. I have the same on brand new chain, cassette and 105 derailleur. B-screw does sweet f.a.

No, they're not supposed to be re-used once fitted... but you may not die
