So what do I have to do? Buy a bash guard clearly (what sort?) Then up the size of the middle ring to 36? Up the size of the granny ring to 34(is this necessary?)Change to shorter cage rear mech?
Sensible help please.......

What are you actually trying to achieve? If you just find that you don't ever use the big ring, then just replace it with a bash and don't do anything else.
If you sometimes use the big ring then you might want to change the middle to a 36 to get the higher gears.
