what a suprise, the government/royal family are bandwagon jumpers

well done to him, he has achieved a lot and deserves recognition, but i'm sure there are lots more deserving cases, just because he's high profile atm he gets the glory

but i suppose if it gets more people on bikes or inspires them in other areas to work for their success rather than rely on the state etc, it can't be a bad thing

Pleased for him.

Why did Adlington 'only' get an OBE for winning two Golds when Kelly Holmes was Damed for winning two Golds?

Anyone know the order of importance of CBE, OBE, MBE?

Why are they bandwagon jumpers?
Firstly, cycling is a 5 minute wonder as a hit sport as far as the vast majority of the population is concerned. Secondly, isn't the honours system used to recognise stuff like this normally? Would you be whining about the lack of recognition received if there had been none?

Since we've got the honours system, we might as well use it.

bandwagon jumpers coz they are using Hoys high profile to make themselves look good
i.e. "look, we may have f***ed up the country, but look how touchy feely and in touch with the people we are byt knighting this cyclist bloke, how can you fail to re elect us? " etc etc

if it wasn't hoy it would have been someone else who has 'celebrity' status, takes a bit of the shine off i know

I don't know if the honours system gets anybody re-elected.

Although they did give that Sara Payne's mum something, which does look a bit like pandering to the NoTW reading, paedo-fearing masses.

Did Dave Brailsford get anything?

I admire Chris Hoy and the many other British riders, but bottom line is that he does not save lives, he cycles round a track. Respect to him, but the honours system is shallow, full of the in crowd patting each other on the back and should be (if it exists at all) done by public vote.

Arise Lord Mandleson, national hero. Says it all...

I was with you till the last bit, that already exists and is called strictly come x talent or similar. 🙂
The problem of opening the honnors to a general public vote, is that on the whole the general public are fickle and stupid, and you'd end up with people voting for Sir wasitname who used to be in the soap, but had a lovely bum and cried a bit cos he misses his mum in i'm a celeb and get me out of here. Plus Ant and Dec would be voted King and Queen.
Giving the awards to only worthy people - people who save lives - run homeless shelters etc. would mean that people really wouldn't pay any attention to the honours, because no one is really that interesting in the good and the worthy, meaning the honours would no longer have a high public profile.
Hence why we currently have a combination of the good, worthy, famous, winners, rich and powerful. That way many sections of society are aware of the honours, though few will be happy with the way they are selected 🙂

70% this year were awarded to "normal" people.

I assume Holmes already had something. Also it was Holmes' last Olympics. Hopefully Adlington will win a lot more.

Anyone know the order of importance of CBE, OBE, MBE?

It goes...

Commander...

Officer...

Member of the Order of the British Empire.

There's hope for us all then 😉

Which is why we're all discussing Chris's honour and not his Mum's (yes, I know this is a cycling forum).

Another kick in the teeth for Mark Cavendish! After winning four stages of the Tour de France, but missing out on gold in Beijing, he can't be too happy to see all his Olymic teammates picking up honours and being left off the list himself. Especially as he wasn't the happiest of chaps about the set-up in Beijing, which he felt robbed him of the chance of a medal.

It does seem a bit harsh on Cavendish. Perhaps he'll have to win the Green jersey to get a gong.

Yes but Cavendish always comes across as a right miserable sod or is that just me.
