does it work as it says? any one used it long term and it does what its supposed to? doesnt seem a bad solution for £25 if it really does eliminate chain slap

Yes. Replaced the naff chainstay protector on my Bird AM9. I'd recommend it.

...I think I had a VHS slapper tape back in the 80's! 🙂

It's good but make sure you wrap it under the chainstay as mine is prone to lifting with heel rub, and it delaminates. I cut mine to stop on the vertical so don't do that!

Fixed with tape but rather it didn't happen.

The Scotch 2228 is also a pretty robust alternative

ah great - does it completely silence the chainslap? its hard to believe it will get rid of all the noise as it claims, but clearly must be onto something

bugger bruneep ive just ordered some, let me see how this goes and ill likely have that one off you too if its still available as a spare

i like to have a silent bike - axs mechs are louder than standard mechs IMO so having something to try and cancel most of that out would be great

has anyone managed to fit it over a existing one?

so dont do it so its just hanging on the edge of the top of the chainstay you mean? wants overlappying down further on the outside of the chainstay?

On my install I should of wrapped it under the chainstay not just down the face of that makes sense.

When my heel lifts on the pedals it obviously catches the bottom edge and the two layers have seperated.

It doesn't completely silence things but helps a lot, clutch still required

These are a more ugly alternative that won’t suffer from lifting off. Luckily they’re the sort of thing you notice and then forget about

had a look at them too - not as easy on the eye, and i believe i could only run 1 due to my traingle (not sure if it does actually require 2 to properly work mind)

Running 1 apparently works well. A mate bought them and just split them to run one on his Enduro bike and one on his hardtail

Marsh guard will sell you a metre of that 3m tape. Does the job nicely without being able to see it so visibly as the others.

You could just buy some cheap mastic tape and make little ruffles/ridges along the top of the chainstay with it.

I believe this is what lots of riders and racers did and the Slapper Tape was an evolution of this that looks tidier and less DIY

Whilst Scotch 2228 is great and easy to buy in decent lengths that last a long time, I've switched both mtbs to VHS ST2 and it's awesome. I do still use the 2228 on the inside of the seat stays but otherwise I'm fully converted. Combined with clutch hubs my bike is pretty much silent. A great product.

Re the stay wrap - both mine are steel so the very wide V2 wraps all the way around - no heel rub issues.

One of my favourite MTB products ever
