Anyone compared to marketed products? I picked up a thrown bottle from the Olympics the other year and it had flat coke in. Seems a number of pros use it?

A lad I went to school with who was a decentish tennis player (county level at under 18s) used to use flat coke.
Caffeine and sugar - it'll never catch on!

Flat or watered down it's for the sugar boost. Only use on the last lap because you will use it up and be left with nothing. Similar to gobbling half a bag of jelly babies at the bottom of your last hill before home. A bit old school since there are now plenty of gels around with caffeine as well. Try it since it is cheap and it may well work for you.

Yep, always used to use flat coke in my water bottle as a last lap boost. Tried American IPA instead this year and took a wrong turn losing out on an extra lap count by seconds 😳 😆

You see plenty TdF riders drinking small cans of the stuff mid stage, so I dont see why not.

It's easier to flatten it when it's in a plastic bottle.

When I did a lot of sailing (International level), our team team dieticians gave us a combo of orange juice, water, glucose and salt.

Can't you just drink it regularly, rather than just at the end (depending on your activity)

We also ate half a banana, handful of cold pasta and a fun sized mars bar every 30 minutes. That was right from the start of the third race. There were usually 2 or 3 90 minute races per day.

There is nothing better than an ice cold can of coke after a long, hot summer road ride. it's nectar. (That is the only time I ever drink it)

Aside from the sugar issue (I've just looked at that actually - a serving of High 5 contains 44g carbs (18g sugar), a can of Coke contains 35g carbs, all sugar), Coke is very acidic, and I imagine the litres of the stuff you'd end up consuming it probably wouldn't sit very well in your stomach.

sky have banned their riders from fizzy drinks during and after racing.

I did a training weekend, long ago, with a gatorade sponsored athlete who was also a doctor of chemistry, he drank flat coke, maybe watered down. I wouuldn't worry about it, as long as you can tolerate it during hard efforts it'll be fine.
I think the dietician advice above goes back to old ideas about cramping. Sky sponsors look like pseudo science wranglers to me, and the comment about acidic drinks is irrelevant: stomach acid will sort that no probs.

Well perhaps it's not the acidity, but some people react to large quantities of certain drinks, and for many I'd expect Coke to cause issues. I'd want to try it, that's all, before ploughing ahead and downing gallons of it in a race.

You're right, try it before a race, in race like conditions. But don't give in too easily: your stomach can be trained like anything else. coke is no more likely to cause issues than any other drink taken to excess, or not enough...

It (flat) got me through the last 10 miles of the foot race at the end of many ironman triathlons. I wouldn't have wanted to use it earlier - couldn't tell you why, I think I'd have probably barfed if I'd used it for more than the last hour or so.

I'm not sure if it was an old wives tale but we also used to use it after swimming in manky fresh water because it 'killed the bugs off'. I expect that was bobbins.

I used it to free a rusted-in steel seatpost in a steel frame. F- putting it anywhere near my teeth!

Why would you though? Surely it's more expensive than plenty of proven alternatives. Clearly it has a role to play, but other than it's global availability I'm not sure why you'd want to condition yourself to subsist on it 😕

Plenty of sailors,canoeists and open swimmers drink coke to kill bugs. No idea if is true or just an excuse.

I certainly enjoy a coke after a ride sometimes. But I'm not exactly an elite athlete so my opinion counts for nothing.

Food Unwrapped last night had a section on energy drinks. Basic upshot was that any performance gain was purely down to the caffeine and sugar in most energy drinks so I would infer that coke would be no better or worse than any other "sports" drink.

Drinking coke to prevent stomach upsets after surfing in dodgy water is an old surfer's remedy which I subscribed to for a while but I now understand that it's complete bobbins.

This is well old skool. I used to have a bottle of flat full-fat coke for the last lap of an XC race 10 years ago, the theory being that the sugar would power you along another 20 mins and the sugar crash would be too late to matter. Cheaper than poncy gels.

Sky use (or used, a couple of years ago*) coke as an emergency pick-me-up - inch of water in the bottom of a bottle, can of coke (think that takes the fizz out?) and add an energy gel. For emergency use only, it's done the trick for me in my hour of need, mentally if not physically (and all that sugar is gonna make a difference).

* I overheard a Sky DS telling Martin Brundle.

Ibuprofen and pro-plus dissolve better in coke than in water for that last lap bottle as well, can also do double duty as a hangover cure.

NSAIDs + exercise is reportedly bad for kidneys and intestines - i'd steer clear if i were you.

I used flat fat-coke and water mixed 50/50 in my camelbak on Sunday at brass monkeys and had my best result of the series so it must work 😉 😀

I had no I'll effects or problems from drinking around 1.5l of it.

Used half a can of Coke for each of the last 3 laps of Torq In Your Sleep when I could no longer stomach solids/gels. Stopped me giving up and was a real lifesaver.

When did they do that?
There is a 2014 GCN video showing what riders get in musettes at races, and it shows a can of Coke in the Sky one. I remember Knees drinking a bottle of orange pop in record time just after the finish of a race recently as well.

Yep flat coke at end of Ironman it is awesome works a treat and tastes divine after water or energy drink for 10 hours 🙂
