Anyone store there ...

[Closed] Anyone store there bikes 'offsite' - i.e no garage or garden shed.

as above really - we're moving, downsizing and the houses we've seen / currently on the market mostly do not have much in the way of shed / garage potential.

One house on the list ticks most boxes, expect bike storage, though we do have a rented plot for a garage, same road, 5 mins walk from the door.
Security would be a concern - though the garages there are overlooked by houses - just pondering the faff-factor?

Yep, only have enough space at home for one bike so I keep the others in a steel box on a local farm. Safe enough IMO just a pain when I'm not organised & want to ride a different one.

Knowing a guy who recently had a bike stolen from inside the house I would suggest even if you are keeping them indoors they need to be bolted to a ground anchor and the property protected by an alarm...

I used to have an arrangement with my LBS that one of my bikes lived there. I think it was a bit cheeky with hindsight, but at least it was safe. Mine now all live in my hallway, which isn't ideal, but does give me good reason to only own pretty bikes.

I keep my kayak and my bike in my living room. Its behind me right now. My misses hates it all being in the house but i told her it'll get cold outside. Plus my daughter loves my kayak and is often found thumping it rhythmically.

Yep, right now most of mine are in a Self Storage place as the house is full of crates of building materials (windows, doors) etc.....

Once I sort out a secure workshop I'll store them in that.

I just leave mine on the front lawn where the rain can wash them. Saves time packing them away, people round here know how awesome I am so they just leave them well alone.

plescostomus - I got mine from Tigersheds 4.5 years ago. it is still solid but the key is to have a decent base for the shed to sit on. You'll also need to put some frosted plastic on the inside of the windows, some bars on the inside of the window and I'd recommend some decent padlocks along with hasp and clasps.beef up the locks with decent hasp and clasps - don't skimp on these.

Pragmasis do a good range of anchors and chains.

Don't forget to installed coach bolts in the hinges - you'll need a decent drill and drill bit to get through.

So, bottom line is 'it's an option' ๐Ÿ˜‰

Had pondered rOcKeTdOgs' idea - using a barrage balloon - we're under the flight path Manchester airport - TBH, they did not mind the idea, RAF put a block on it though as they use the valley for low-level training flights.... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Let the house viewings commence...!

at uni, i had 4 bikes at the foot of my bed. Not much choice tbh. I met my girlfriend at that time. Now that we live together, she thinks that having 3 in the kitchen and 1 frame under the bed is a much better situation (i agree). I'd like a road bike, but I've no idea where i could store it, perhaps in the bath,,,

I wouldn't keep them in a shed or anything like that. I'd worry too much and build it up like Fort Knox

Cycling is a big part of my life and I would never move somewhere where there wasn't space to store them securely inside the house with space for a work stand and maybe a small bench.

I like watching Escape To The Country and those sorts of programmes and I always find it quite sad when the bloke has a passion for cars or hi-fi or bike or whatever and needs space to suit his passion. Somehow that need always comes last or is derided and laughed at. But when it comes to the wife wanting a massive kitchen or bathroom or whatever and that seems to be the deciding factor despite other things which the husband wants not up to what he needs.

I am so glad my wife understands that I/we need space for bike stuff and I know our next house will be suited to both our needs and desires.

We bought our house with 'garage' at the top of the list, it was a must have. Garage, workroom, garden then house in that order.

Maybe if you bought a steel box and this was secure inside the garage.

When I lived in my teeny 1 bed flat the bikes were kept in the hallway at the bottom of the stairs, you had to climb over them to get up the stairs, however they were secure and that's what mattered.

Have you had an offer on yours marsdenman?

Same issue as yourself but i have gone down the route of storage unit/space but that has issues, like one other poster had said about being organised, your always up and down and sometimes forgetting odd bits here and there but I would like to hope that my bikes are safe..Because a don't know about most you guys but if they go i can't afford to replace them!!!!

Personally I don't think i would be happy or be able to sleep knowing they were just in a garage even if they were over looked by houses, but that said if you make it as secure as you can...but the buggers will get in if they want...
