I am flying from Svolvaer to London via Oslo in August with my bike

However, my ticket says maximum weight for any hold luggage is 23kgs (my bike and bag will weigh around 23kgs without any spares etc)

Anyone had this issue?

Thanks

I'm curious as I'll need to be doing a similar flight but from Bodo to Manchester. I haven't booked flights yet but I believe SAS and Norwegian are other options (from Bodo, at least - not sure about Svolvaer)

I presume you're riding Lofoten?

I am flying out with SAS from London to Harstad via Oslo and no problem - bike and bag can weigh up to 30 kgs.

The flight back is from Svolvaer to London and the first leg is Svolvaer to Oslo with Wideroe and this seems to be the issue - 23 kgs max for bike and bag. The leg from Oslo to London is with SAS and again 30kgs allowance for bike and bag

Just checked and the plane is a de havilland canada dhc-8-400 dash 8q - not sure if that’s the issue?

How are you transporting your bike bag between Harstad and Svolvaer?

(I'll be flying into Tromso and out of Bodo)

Panic over, I think?

Woderoe have just emailed to say “If it is over 23 kg you must pay for overweigt at the airport. It is 150NOk (£11.66) pr kg”

I must have flown over 30 times with bikes and never had this sort of issue.

Nice! I'm doing-it-myself (credit card touring, not bike packing) and hoping the weather cooperates 🤞

Most airlines have a specific booking option for overweight or oversize baggage. If you fly with the likes of EasyJet / Ryanair etc, at point of booking you can select the normal baggage (up to 23kg) or various special baggage options - skis, golf clubs, bikes - which allows you up to 32kg but comes at an increased fare (Ryanair I think is £60 each way for a bike box so £120 on top of whatever the airfare is).

I've flown loads of times like that and budget airlines are well used to bikes so it's always been pretty straightforward. However if you're on a small regional airline with limited space, they may be actively discouraging excess baggage.

I can normally get my bike box, road bike and all my kit in it weighing about 28kg total so assuming you can do the same, you'd be looking at an additional 5kg at £11.66 = £58(ish) each way. Expensive but not that much different to a Ryanair flight.

Might be worth seeing how many bags at 23kg each (and the size) you're allowed and seeing if you can split them; the bike in a cardboard box packed as lightly as possible and the clothing, tools, kit etc packed in a suitcase.

Widerøe have some really small planes in their fleet. The longer, busier routes they use embraer 190s, but the short hops you’re likely to get a  dash8 and then possibly just the 100series which is basically one up from a transit with wings. They’ll be very conscious of take off weight and want to dissuade people from eating into capacity.

Nice airline, more likely to actually turn up than SAS who had a habit of going on strike/not turning up/ going spectacularly bust in an Alitalia-esque way. Last flight with SAS I took they dumped me in bodø, having claimed that tromso was shut. They disembarked everyone and then immediately took of and flew the aircraft on to… Tromso. Was stuck there for 8 hours while they found another aircraft / waited for the “fog” to clear.

I miss travelling up there. It was fun. Ice landings are squirmy spectacular.

@hot_fiat

In which case, would Norwegian be a better/more reliable airline?

Yep, I’d choose Norwegian over SAS.  Budget carrier, but more easyJet than Ryanair.

My experience is that SAS are oftena little bit late, Norwegian usually prompt, but if they're delayed they're really delayed (hours, day!). I use either, ditto my son who flies to Tromso a lot.

Norwegian own Widerøe.
