As I've not had any major lectures this week I've been out at the local bmx jump track every morning. By Thursday my riding was going really well, I could consistently get through the whole rhythm section of bigger tabletops. I even picked up the confidence to start doing the longer doubles which need a load of speed and commitment. Went up today and I'm doing rubbish again. Only cleared the whole lot of tables once and kept coming up short on the doubles due to a lack of commitment.

So anyone else had this problem and how did you overcome it?

Only reason I could think I'm not doing so well today is because it was empty in the week and today there were a load of kids there getting in the way etc. I seem to be quite a self conscious rider/person as well so maybe that has something to do with it..

They probably aren't even watching you or judging your skills tbh. Know what you mean though. I hate it when I have an audience sometimes.

Not had the same problem (because I have never done any jumps, not because I am awesome, I am seriously not awesome!) but it sounds like you have sussed out that it is confidence. Take it easy and enjoy it, if it isn't going well pootle around some little stuff and remember that even on the hallowed turf of Singletrackworld you will still be doing stuff that some of us (ok, just me then) still want to have a go at, but aren't quite ready for yet.

Sometimes worth talking to the other riders, unless they're little scallies who aren't really into biking and just hanging around (in which case I'd say you're probably better than them anyway). I've made a few good friends from riding alone and sessioning jumps, getting talking to them, and some even gave good advice. You'll get more respect for asking for advice than saying you're having an off day and normally ride loads better.

Yeah I've been up a few times before and got some good advice from the mtb'ers who ride there. I have tried talking to the younger riders (am I allowed to say that yet being only 21 myself?! 😆 ) but don't get much of a conversation out of them, even been completely ignored a few times!

haha, well I'm no jumping god by any stretch of the imagination but have improved a lot over the last month. Here are 2 vids from the week when I was doing alright, got no style but at least I was hitting them with confidence 🙂
