So since upgrading my shock, the front now feels horrible. I have a '17 Yari so no Debonair fitted. I'm looking at two options: 1. do a coil conversion and keep the moco damper, or 2. upgrade to Debonair + Charger 2.1.
My question is, is there any point in doing a coil conversion if I plan on keeping the moco damper? Will it still feel harsh and spikey even with a coil?
The moco damper is really subpar if you do any sort of aggressive riding.
Before even considering a coil, I'd drop a Charger damper and see how that goes.
The Debonair shaft makes a little difference in sensitivity, but for the price it might be worth a try
Get rid of the damper first - always. After the fork is freed to move up and down as it should, you can then decide if a better spring or coil is for you (I’m Charger 2 with coil)
The damper will make a big difference.
A debonair spring is cheap in comparison, so might as well do both together!
I have a luftkappe & a novyparts splug in my non debonair yari.
Wasn't a bad fork, at all but could never get it setup as well as my old pike on fast rough stuff
The luftkappe helped a bit (tho not as much as it did in the pike)
Splug is great tho not as tuneable as charger, -they shim HSC for your weight etc. but it's half the price.
Also look at the fast yari up from tft
Yep, until you get rid of the Moco damper that's going to be the limit/bottleneck in the system.
I have some Yari forks on the front of my 29 plus Sonder.
I initially found them to be unbearably crap.
I currently have a debonair air shaft, Charger 2.1 damper and an MRP ramp kit.
As above the debonair upgrade is pretty cheap and made a world of difference - it eradicated the first 10mm of sloppy travel and made the fork feel a lot plusher.
I then went with the Charger 2.1 damper as the additional plushness and feel felt mismatched with the MOCO damper. I have an earlier charger damper on a Pike fork and that was a game changer for me even over RS's earlier Blackbox damper.
The new damper albeit expensive changed the fork once again for the better.
The MRP ramp kit ..... well who doesn't want another dial to play with.
Slight hijack, does anyone know if a RS 35 fork can be upgraded internally outta interest?
I fitted a 'Yari-up' from fast as a damper upgrade, whilst also putting a Vorsprung Smashpot coil in the other leg.
Makes a very average fork into a tuneable smooth monster. Only worth doing (financialy) as i got a new Yari for £300.
I'm in a quandry on what to do with the damper on my Yari as well. Charger RCT3 or RC2 or the YariUp, which i think is still open bath?
Thanks for everyone's replies, Charger 2.1 it is!
I have a 2019 Yari RC at 170mm I dropped a smashpot in when got the forks, never rode it before put in the smashpot. It's a good fork but as others have said needs a Yari up fitted to finish forks off currently not as good as my Custom Bos Devilles runnig an Onlins air shaft & Idylle damper
Same fork here. Fitted previous debonair upgrade, cheap and some improvement. This Xmas fitted a charger 2.1 damper unit - not cheap, but massive improvement. Heaps cheaper than new fork of course. I've the latest 2021? debonair parts on order, press reports this helps & is a cheapo mod. So...get spendy & get that damper!
I wish someone would review all the possible damper upgrades for these.
Charger 2.1 Vs novyparts splug Vs fast yariup Vs fast cartridge Vs Avalanche cartridge.
I only went for the yari-up, as the smashpot coil was already going to give me (effectively) control over the HSC by way of the bottom out control. So, they work well together.
Upgrade my '18 Yari's with Debonair spring and Charger 2.1 RC2 damper.
I upgraded my Yari in two stages. Firstly I went with a Charger 2.0 damper and the improvement was great. Some time later I bought a Smashpot coil and as Lardman has mentioned an upgraded damper and the coil makes for a brilliant fork.
I've more recently been in touch with TF Tuned about a dampers for a current model Revelation and they recommended the Yari/Revelation-Up rather than a Rockshox Charger upgrade. A Rockshox Charger is a full assembly with the damper and rebound shaft. Easy enough to fit if you're comfortable with a RS lower leg service. The Yari-Up works out cheaper but only replaces the damper.
It's an even easier DIY job and TF advised that as the RS rebound damper is already good then the Yari Up is the way to go.
It's not really the way to build up a new fork but if you've already got the Yari and feel the need to spend money on improvements then it's certainly a viable route to take.
I just called TFTuned & spoke to a technician, he suggested the following regarding dampers;
RCT3, Best value & still a significant upgrade over the MoCo.
Yari up, again significant upgrade over MoCo but could still lose performance over prolonged descents as the oil & air can still mix. This one obviously has more tuning options.
RC2, Best one but most expensive.
I had a non-boost Yari in 160mm travel. When I wanted to go 170mm travel I went for a 2019 debonair air shaft and rct3 charger 2 damper. Transformed the fork immeasurably. Start is plusher and it ramps up less hard.
It’s now got the same damper but a 140mm debonair air shaft as I changed to a shorter travel bike. It’s much better than the 140mm debonair Pike I have on the hardtail which has a charger 1 damper in it.
I looked at the Fast Yari Up / Novyparts dampers but decided the charger was cleaner and easier to fit and play with.
This is interesting, cheers.
This is something I need to look at. A luftkappe made a big difference to my 160’s, running best with no tokens or the MRP I stuck in before. The standard damper is fine and I like it’s simplicity but on fast repetitive Rocky trails it just goes to pieces.
Just to add I tried the MRP ramp control and didn’t get on with it. Even on full open I found it ramped up too hard. I think it’s the equivalent of 1 or 2 tokens at its minimum setting. So I sold it on for what I bought it for....I suspect it’s better for heavier / more aggressive riders than me.
