Walked past this morning, no lights on, took a closer look and there's a note with the administrator's phone number on the door. Shame to see a shop go under.

Ah, shame. I bought my Trek 4700 (first 'proper' mountain bike) from there a long time ago.

There's going to be more going the same way.....it's tough times in the bike trade -here we go with the 'then they don't deserve to survive' blah blah blah.
Its a saturated market and there's not enough trade to go round anymore.

That's a shame. IIRC, Dean was one of the first to push snowboarding in the UK. I had a trip with them to the 95 Brits in Meribel/Mottaret. Fun times.

Wishing them all the best for future ventures

really Rorschach? because I work in the bike trade, on the supply side, and in my experience a lot of our dealers are continuing to go from strength to strength, and the sales, and customers, are out there and spending money - the thing is that the ones going pop recently have always been disorganised, excuse making, and bad payers... even when times were good!

agree with zulu-eleven. The number of bike shops in Sheffield has grown loads over the last 3 years. They are all very very busy from what I've seen!

On the flip-side two new ones have opened up near me - one in Belper and one in Matlock.

I have a friend who works in the import/distribution side of the bike trade and they can't get stock in quick enough!

Ain't that the truth!!
I've only been in the trade for 7 years so far so i have limited experience. You can tell when times are tough though.....reps start jumping ship and changing jobs!Distributors are holding less stock and encouraging shops to take on more pre-buying.There is business out there but increased competition means more discount and less margin-its suprisingly easy to end up working like a navvy selling lots, only to end up not making any money (any idiot can do that!).A lot of businesses also flattered themselves with cycle to work and the reduction in the take up has hurt them the most. The stonger businesses (new and old) will consolidate but the weaker ones won't be able to rely on a bouyant market anymore.

Yep, all good for the good ones. My town shops of choice (CycleSurgery) continue to expand and improve. My country LBS (Stonehenge Cycles) are expanding as well, opened a new road and tri offshoot branch across the road recently.

Good bike shops are doing well. Bad bike shops are closing.

All, the bike shops round our way seem to be booming. The ones that closed down a few years ago seemed to be the family run, "we've always done it this way" type shops, who never had websites, on line sales, repair facilities etc etc. Judging by the number of fantastic bikes on the Dragon ride yesterday (didn't see much worth less than £2k), cycling is a sport with a lot of money being spent in it.

Maybe they should stop charging 75 quid for a squirt of oil and a twiddle on the cables and people will stop turning their backs in preference of mail order and doing their own twiddling.

Got to say can't see the one in Belper staying open very long. Went in the other day and was not impressed at all.

Not heard about the one in Matlock though, what's that called?
Matlock isn't big enough for two bike shops so would expect Sir Stanely of Ferns to drive them out of town.

Extreme sports shut down on Monday 23rd. They took my bike in for repair on the Saturday before and told me to come in on Tuesday. Their website is still up but nobody is contactable. Anybody got any advice?

+1 Very much so.. You did get a receipt when you left your bike with them didn't you. It will be more difficult with out but I would hope that there is a record in the shop diary.
