Me and my 12 year old lad have built a bike up for him - 2005 (I think) 15" HR and we are just mounting some disc brakes to it, front is fine but its the rear we have the issue with - the 160mm adapter when fitted rubs against the disc. The frame looks straight and I've tried a couple of wheels, same result. The distance between disc mount holes and the disc is about 16mm and that is the exact width of the adapter. I've compared it against my epic and that same distance is 19mm. Is it the frame or do I have to source a thinner adapter? I can't see any impact damage on the rear and with the wheel in it spins true. We are mounting shimano cables or avid juicy 3's or 5's, whichever he likes the look of/will fit. See the pix for comparison, the axle lengths for each bike are the same and the wheels are interchangable.

Any ideas?

Cheers, Nitram.

No idea why, 2005ish is much later than the revision of IS measurements that may have explained it.As for dealing with it, facing the mounts back should give more clearance(though not necessarily enough), and some fiddling with spacers on the hub axle may give a touch more.

Thanks coatesy, I compared against the back ends of a number of frames and its only this HR thats wrong (04 HR, 06 RH, 08 Myka). I might try machining down the adapter or just leave him on rim brakes till he outgrows the frame. I wonder if I moved to a bigger disc that would lift the caliper up higher off the frame leg then I could use a different adapter like maybe this sort of thing:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/20mm-Disc-Rotor-Adaptor-180mm-7In-Hope-Magura-/140548407005?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item20b9567edd

Maybe bolt through the frame inside through this and nut on the outside. Then mount the IS adapter on top then teh caliper on top of that.

Or are there any hinnner IS adapters on the market?
