The BUCS champiionships are being held here in March but it doesn't look like I'll get a chance to try it out before hand as there's maintenance being done.
Just wanted to know what the course is like and what kind of set up would be best. I'm not looking at a good position but just wondered would my weight weenie-ish prophet be fine?

I was at ae last week. The forest maintenance means you couldn't drive up but you can still push up and session it. its not that bad a push tbh.

I have also owned a prophet and i think you will struggle if its a weight weenie prophet, you would be better to go check out the course rather than enter the race and risk damaging your bike.

OK I'll see if I can get a few runs in and if it's as you say I might pinch my girlfriends DH bike then.

NIce track but the step down at the bottom is pretty HUGE! Any phots you see wont do it justice until you're stood at the lip of it

The step down is a BIG feature, wouldn't want to go off that on a weight weenie prophet TBH.

Not ridden there but have spectated at a couple of NPSs in the past.

You can always go round the step-down, it'll cost you a few seconds but is by far the wise option if you're not used to that sort of thing. Course should be ridable on almost any bike but you're going to need something beefy to avoid getting beaten up and put in a semi-good time. IIRC Ae is long, rough, technical and has a few pretty big features (Coffin Jump, Step-down and Elevator being the biggest) brings back happy memories of racing BUCS(BUSAs) at Inners and Dunkeld.

Yeah I think I'll miss the biggest jumps unless I'm doing the run drunk as I'm sure many might/will be. It was more a question of the technical nature/ surface. I don't have any hope of putting in a good time as the better riders than me in the club got 200th or something. Just doing it for the experience of riding down a difficult downhill course (probably in the wet) takling terrain beyond my capabilities while being constantly heckled. Should be a larff.

as far as im aware the step down wont be in the bucs race. its just too big a feature to have have-a-go students throwing themselves off. thats what i heard on the grapevine anyway.

I've done it on my Whyte (5" travel) - its all rideable but you get pretty shaken up - you'd be at quite a disavantage speed wise compared to those on DH bikes (rigs?) and I'm not sure I'd trust a featherwieght setup.
I certainly wouldn't want to do the Coffin jump or step down on anything other than a full DH bike

The Downhill route will be closed from 22nd February for 2 weeks for essential maintenance. Please do not use the trail during this time as this will prolong the repair work.

I'd love to try this route, never done it yet. Anyone any videos of this big step down?

Looks distinctly small 🙂 Actually I'd give it a go on my NRS if it was more of a drop and less of a jump! I hate jumps.

That crash vid doesn't really do it justice. Its not a jump its a drop. Its about 6' vertical and if you don't make it across the fireroad onto the down slope (makes it closer to 8' vertical) then its going to hurt. I've seen some pretty good riders hook up the rear on the edge of the downslope and just about get away with it, others crash badly. I also saw someone huck it to flat, it wasn't pretty but they didn't die 🙂

Sounds like its not going to be in the race though, the coffin should be enough to scare the beejeezus out of people though.

Standing at the bottom and stretching up to touch the top is about 7ft, I am 6ft tall btw. Could nip up next week and take some pics for you all........
