Inspired by a recent Cotic upgrade thread, I've been thinking of forgetting the new bike with midrange components and spending half the outlay on some better components for my old-fashioned 26er (Dialled Alpine).
Now both above-said wheels can be had very reasonably, review well and would be a bit lighter than Stan's Flows on Pro IIs. Any experience or advice? Other suggestions?
Riding is standard along up and down mountain biking; lots of fun stuff but nothing too extreme. Natural rocky and milder downhill courses probably my limit. I'm probably about 10 and a half stone kitted up.
Cheers.
Kevin has been running the American Classics AMs for the last three years. Hes a bit heavier than you. They are his do all wheels and are used regularly in the Peak and on our Alps trips. His words, light, smooth and bomb proof.
The SX are amazing wheels, I've had a pair for four years or so and they've only needed bearings.
Would they be too stiff for a hardtail though? I don't know because I've only used mine on (about six) full-sus bikes.
Thanks for the replies, looks like I'll be good with either. Leaning slightly towards the American Classics as slightly wider and lighter.
The only downside with American Classic wheels is the pick up is slow. I've got three pairs but they are noticeably slower to engage than say pro2s. Note also if you want to run 15mm and they're QR you need two 19mm (I think) cone scanners to get the front axle out
Thanks Rob, I'll keep that in mind while I'm looking at what's available.
Another problem with American classic is the spring pick up in the freehub. It's just one spring with a flattened end which over time, wears out. Spring cost, probably 5p...except you can't buy one, so it's £50 for a new freehub.
I've now had to replace two.
Nice to see my Cotic upgrade thread is spawning its own follow up threads!
