I've had a read through some of the older threads on 1x10 for CX, but wonder if any one has anything else to add based on further experiences of racing this season...

Mainly I'm pondering ratios. I currently run a 38t inner ring. I've just put a 11-32 cassette on there so have a nice wide range. Do folk run 40 (or even bigger?!) up front on a 1x10? And how do you find it?

Cheers, Chris

42 tooth, single ring, 12-27 sram cassette. Perfect for racing

A few of the CX big boys run single, size depend on course, but most I think are around 42-44.

A lot do run doubles, but they reduce the size of the big ring down to 42-44 and have the inner ring 38-39, just incase they need a inner gear, also it helps catch the chain if it comes off.

looks a bit strange, like a real think chain ring with a quick look.

Cheers guys. The plan is not to actually run it single per se - it's my bike which gets used for both CX racing and winter road training.

The outer is going to be a 50t, which is too big really for CX racing. I think I've settled on the 42t for the inner ring, and for CX racing will use that as an effective single ring, just changing at the rear. 11-32 at the back should give me plenty of bail out option for the peak district road climbs.

I think that's my plan anyway. For the time being ๐Ÿ™‚

I run 1x10 with 41t x 11-32 for my CX bike which is used for commuting and also muddy Scottish races.

Gearing works well for me, although if anything, I'll probably go to 40t when I need a new chainring. 42t would be fine for most courses, even some of the muddy climbs we have in local CX races.

Do you need a 50t too? Unless you are riding in a chaingang and have road slicks on, I think you would find a 42x11 sufficient for winter road riding.

I'd love a bash at racing with a 1x10, if dropping to inner ring I'd imagine you'd be better hoofing it anyway? Hopefully next year I can afford to run a drivetrain.

Yeah, I will be and want to keep the top end speed for the moments of madness with that ๐Ÿ™‚
