I have an old DH frame that uses a maxle. The end near the lever has an expanding wedge as you close the lever.

Can I replace this axle with one that doesn't have an expanding wedge?

My frame doesn't have a 3.5mm recess like the new 142 standard to locate the hub in the frame.

Superstar do a 150x12 bolt thru - Allen key head on one side, 17mm bolt on the other

I've got one in my frame - no recess on the hub side either...wheel just slots into place and the axle holds it

I bought a maxle ultimate for my Marin quake, which doesn't have recessed dropouts. I bought it from bike-components.de, which was cheaper than CRC, wiggle

Glad to know people are using the newer type axles on older frames.

Does anyone know why they developed an axle with an expanding wedge type interface.

I remember having old DH bikes where the actuall dropout clamped up tight on the axle, after you had tightened it side to side.

Just concerns me the axle is only being clamped laterally.
