I've been thinking about doing the whole 1x10 speed quite a bit lately. The 36t cassette being the big point, meaning I could probably deal with most the climbs I do. I've just been put off by the cost of a new mech, shifter, chain and cassette. However I stumbled across this at work today. Think I might get one and see how things go.
Did anyone else know of it?

yep i saw that, went 10sp xt in the end though and it works well, really good in fact. light but good and accurate.

isnt there something in one of the current mags saying they had no trouble using 9 speed mech and chain though? so only cassette and rh shifter to pay for

Yeah mech should be ok; being a 'dumb' component. May have issues with chain length though if you run it tight already?

The mechs have different cable pull ratio's, so pull 1 mm of cable on a 9speed mech and the jocke wheels move 2mm, on the 10speed its more like pull 1mm move 1.5 (not exactly, but it is different).

IIRC 10speed shifters work with 9speed mechs and cassetts, but leave a redundant click at the end.

are you sure about this? why will a 9spd chain not work? too wide?

Would it not be frustrating to have gears but still have to walk up certain climbs?

You may manage to get the mech to work after a fashion, but it's not intended to work, and most likely won't be satisfactory.

OP - I heard about that cassette the other day i think on here with quotes like "they have a deore 12-36 that weighs a metric tonne"

When I go 1x10 mid next year it'll be with the 9-36 hope cassette to go with X7 mech, shifter and chain. will be expensive but the range will be brilliant.

Do you not get a narrower range of gears with a 12-36 cassette than a 11-34 cassette?

This is where I don't understand why you'd buy a 10 speed SRAM 1050 or 1070 cassette over a Shimano 11-36 SLX/XT cassette. When I go 1x10 the whole point in doing it 10 speed will be to get a wider range of gears than a 1x9 speed setup, and for this you need a 11-36 cassette (which the only options currently are Shimano SLX/XT or SRAM XX) unless I'm missing something?
