Out with a mate today at Cannock who kept dropping his chain as soon as the going got rough. Bought a chain checker at the shop after the ride and the .75 drops in just, but 0.5 drops in easily. Currently running a Sunrace 40-11 cassette, SLX chain and long cage SLX rear mech with Raceface NW 32 ring on XT cranks. Jockey wheels look ok. Had a quick look online just now and Sunrace do a 42-11 now - is that as big as he can go? Superstar chainring should do the trick but RF is only a fiver more. Any tips on what his best course of action is to get up and running without swearing every time the bike hits anything lumpy? 😉 Cheers

Dropped chains the issue is the chain and chainring wear. New ones of those should make a bit difference. If his gear isprone to wear, there are plenty of stainless steel ones out now too.

Does that derailleur have a clutch? That would be the obvious improvement.

I would be hesitant to go bigger on the cassette, that is just going to mean a longer chain and less tension on it in the harder gears(which is where I assume the chain is dropping off?).

If you are talking about replacing the chain, chainring, caster and derailleur, then all you are keeping is the shifter, in that case, he might as well move to 11 or 12 speed...

Tjaard - mech has a clutch so need real need to ditch it. 11 or 12 would be new everything...10 means to can keep the shifter and mech. So guessing new 10 bits might cost £100ish...12 would be 2/3 times that at a guess. It’s a 2015 Cannondale Trigger - not sure how long plans to hold onto it as that might determine his spend. Stick with Shimano if going 11/12 or SRAM NX/GX?

I run an 10 speed XT M786 medium cage with rad cage fitted running a Sunrace 11-46 cassette and a Uberbike 32t oval and it works fine.
You’ll struggle to find a one up rad cage now but you can get a cheap rear derailleur extender off eBay which should work ok.
There’s been threads on here in the past of people running similar 10 speed setups.

Ok, if derailleur has clutch, then I’d say: new chain and chainring.
If that doesn’t sort it, cheap little upper Guide.
No sense spending more

As above, we’d replace chainring and chain and everything here 1x9/1x10/1x11/1x12 all have a top guide.

I have a 10spd Sunrace 46t cassette which works very well with a clutch mech.
