Fresh Goods Friday 728: The Fairy Tale Edition

by 8

Once Upon A Time in a land far far away… well not that far away, actually kind of in the middle of the UK actually… there were some people who rode bikes and wrote words about them. Except that it was half term, so they took the chance to go somewhere a bit further away than usual.

Hannah has noticed that her neighbour’s lawn looks like this:

Is spore-laden lawn sausages the latest STW revenge? It’s quite the infestation for a suburban housing estate. All a bit Harry Potter. Perhaps she should check for children under the stairs?

She might find her children hiding under the stairs, as she’s booked them tickets to see this band in half term. As it is neither Formula 1 nor rap, enthusiasm is low.

Anyway, on to the FGFness.

BikeYoke Revive 3.0 185mm Dropper Post

In something of a princess and the pea scenario, Benji has a sensitive bottom. With all the different test bikes he rides, some droppers are too short to get out of the way, some droppers are too long for his legs to reach the pedals. To mix your fairy tale metaphors, he’s hoping this 185mm dropper will give him the goldilocks length he’s looking for on some frames. This iteration of the dropper hasn’t changed the fundamentals from the previous ones, but it does have a new saddle clamp that reduces the stack height by 5mm, while the overall length has been reduced by 10mm (handy for fitting more drop into some frames with limited insertion)… we shall see if Benji’s bum can tell the difference.

Fresh Goods Friday 728: D’Movie

Charlie is riding a publicity wave that involves him appearing in tabloid publications. Perhaps no one is more surprised than him – there are so many other stories he’s somehow kept out of the papers (though often in the pages of Singletrack World). He stopped by for a guest appearance on our sofa, to remind him of his roots and keep him humble. Or to play the Beast to Benji’s Beauty? And also to remind you there’s a 25% discount for STW members on Bum Butter, through the discount zone.

BikeYoke Triggy Alpha Long Dropper Remote

This will test whether Benji’s thumb is as sensitive as his bum. Promising an even smoother lever feel than the original Triggy, this comes in two lengths (we have the long one here) and has a 360° adjustable lever so you can get it exactly where you want it.

BikeYoke Grippy Grips

These are designed with a cut out in the inner sleeve, for extra damping. The rubber extends around the lockring, for extra comfort, and there’s more cushioning on the palm side. Slim but comfortable is the aim.

BikeYoke Socks

Also available in the inverse: more pink, less black. Also read in the inverse when you’re upside down in a bush.

Madison Roam 2L Waterproof Jacket

Spectacularly clashing with Benji’s vintage STW hat, it’s the Madison Roam 2 Layer jacket in Rust Orange. Is he dancing, or looking for his house keys? Also available in green and black, it’s a waterproof jacket with waterproofiing and breathability ratings of 10K. The fabric has a slight stretch to it, and rolls away into its own hood for neat packing, should it ever stop raining.

Mavic Allroad SL Carbon Disc Wheelset

Aero spokes. Airtight rim removing the need for rim tape and saving 30g in weight. Vroom! But these are not just designed to be light and fast. They’re also design to be durable, with a Black Shield finish to fend off rocks. And you can stick up to a 64mm tyre on the 25mm rims, so you can choose comfort over speed if you like. Grrrravel wheels?

Zefal Supervision F1500 Front Light

Five light settings up to 1500 lumens, 1.5 hours run time on max setting. IPX6 waterproof rated, so you can ride in the lashing rain without water making its way in. Dual lens for a wider field of vision – particularly handy for mountain bikers wanting to spot monsters at the edge of the trail.

Zefal Supervision R150 Rear Light

150 lumen rear light with five settings. You’ll get 16 hours max out of one flash setting, or 3 hours on the maximum continuous setting. Nice wide rubber strap for holding it in place, looks a bit less fiddly than the usual rubber loops.

Bum Butter Never Grind The Bollocks T-shirt

Charlie doing his promo thing again, this time with a very eye catching T-shirt. Hopefully not catching the eye of any copyright people? Anyway. You get 25% off Bum Butter if you’re a Singletrack Member. Did we/he mentioned that yet?

Featured Member Reward Of The Week

At this point, perhaps Charlie would make some bold claim like ‘Singletrack Readers have 25% less wrinkly bums than other mountain bikers’, or ‘Your bum can be 75% happier’. Brendog has ‘LadScience’, Charlie has ‘ButteredMaths’. Do not put on toast.

Have a reminder of ye olde riding… not actually from that long ago, in the scheme of things:

What is Fresh Goods Friday?

It’s Singletrack’s long running, weekly roundup of all of the new products that have been sent in to the magazine.

Where do all of the goods come from?

They’re sent in by bike companies and marketing agencies

What happens to all of the products?

They’re featured and then some are reviewed down the line in either Singletrack Magazine or in online reviews and photoshoots.

What happens to them when you’ve finished with them?

They’re usually sent back after review, or kept on long-term test bikes. But no one ever asks for shorts and shoes back. Trust us on that. Once we were asked to return some brake pads.

I’m a company making the next big thing. How much does it cost to feature in FGF?

Nothing. Nil. Zero. Diddlysquat. Sod all. Just send all ‘next big things’ to us at – Fresh Goods Friday, Singletrack Magazine, Lockside Mill, Dale Street, Todmorden. OL14 5PX. Please note that if you require the products back after they have featured then you are responsible for arranging collection at your cost. While it is our policy to feature everything we receive in FGF if we decide your product is not suitable for publication we won’t do it. Publication is at our discretion. Whether a product goes on for publication as a review is at editorial discretion. Beer, coffee & spirits will ALWAYS be tested.

Orange Switch 6er. Stif Squatcher. Schwalbe Magic Mary Purple Addix front. Maxxis DHR II 3C MaxxTerra rear. Coil fan. Ebikes are not evil. I have been a writer for nigh on 20 years, a photographer for 25 years and a mountain biker for 30 years. I have written countless magazine and website features and route guides for the UK mountain bike press, most notably for the esteemed and highly regarded Singletrackworld. Although I am a Lancastrian, I freely admit that West Yorkshire is my favourite place to ride. Rarely a week goes by without me riding and exploring the South Pennines.

Those bikeyolk grips look interesting, a bit like some old A’ME BMX grips which my MTB favourite in the 90’s. May be worth a try when I next need some.

Very important, do not under any circumstances pick and eat those mushrooms. Homelessness among smurfs is at crisis points

Interested in the review of the Bikeyolk grip, are they in anyway another option if you have some revgrips, as they currently don’t have a UK distributor and I’m in need of some fresh grips 😉
