Fresh Goods Friday 725: The Enduro Wolsey Edition

by 7

Hello there little buddies! Welcome to the end of the week. We hope the week hasn’t treated you too badly. And if it has, go for a bike ride. It can only help.

The good ship HMS Singletrack World has been struck down by a bit of seasonal lurgy but we have somehow just about managed to cobble together a half-decent FGF for you to enjoy whilst you consume your egg sarnies.

‘ave it!

“and the beer I had for breakfast wasn’t bad so I had one more for dessert”

Exposure Six Pack MK14

Five hundred quid for as torch is not cheap. And truth be told, you don’t *need* 5,800 lumens to go night riding. But if you want what is probably correctly described as “the pinnacle of off-road lighting”, here it is. The 5,800 lumens is nice and everything but the more useful/useable aspect of the Six Pack is being able to run it in one of the more-than-ample mid-power settings and have burn times around four hours or so. The Six Pack retains its ‘Reflex’ tech; it auto adjusts the brightness depending on your speed (and other factors). And it really is an exceptionally well made item. It’s kinda beautiful really (is that a bit OTT? Sorry!)

Exposure Zenith MK3

Exposure describe this thus: “The rider-requested Zenith has now reached even higher levels. Upgraded to 2200 lumens, with a long reaching, wider, diffused beam for more than an hour. Combined with TAP technology, the rapid mode change technology, the rider can use the 2200 lumens when plummeting down a steep, fast descent or tackling a technical trail and then TAP to lower the lumens when on the flat or a climb to increase the run time.” With this on your noggin and the Six Pack on your handlebars, is it even night riding anymore? No, not really. Thank goodness. No one really likes night riding, do they?

Kendal Mint Co. Action Pack

Not content with being the first energy product to scale Mount Everest, Kendal Mint Co. are coming after less lofty leisure market. What’s in this little lot? Natural NRG Rolled Oat Bar, Natural NRG Wholesome Superfood Bar, KMC NRG BAR Chocolate Coated, KMC NRG GEL+ Mint Caffeine Gel, KMC NRG GEL+ Citrus & Mint Caffeine Gel, KMC NRG GEL Chocolate Mint Energy Gel, KMC NRG GEL Raspberry & Mint Energy Gel, KMC PRO MIX Chocolate Mint Whey Protein, KMC ISO MIX Citrus & Mint Isotonic Drink Mix. And yes, some Kendal Mint Cake. TFFT.

Bridgedale Stormsock Midweight Boot Waterproof Sock

  • Price: £41.00
  • From: Bridgedale
  • SQUIRREL_TEXT_13129232

Rambler’s favourites Bridgedale are having a bit of a push into the mountain biking scene this year. Whilst these aren’t specifically cycling socks, they are very much of interest to Brit MTBers. Is there anyone out there who does not own a pair of waterproof socks? Personally speaking, I [Benji] am a big fan of full-on knee length waterproof socks (I find shorter socks just fill with water after a while, ported in from soggy trousers). But any waterproof sock is better than no sock init.

SRAM spare mech and chain

  • Price: £122 mech, £32.99 chain
  • From: SRAM

A quick thanks (once again) to the kind bods at UK SRAM for supplying us with replacement drivetrain parts after we smashed a rear mech and wrote off a chain (again) on a test bike. Honestly, it’s enough to make you wonder if there shouldn’t just be a different way of attaching mechs to frames. Hmm… Cheers SRAM peeps!

Galibier Atlantic Pullover

Looking like something you might find on the terraces of an Italian football stadium (or is that just me?), here’s a rather basic looking garment that turns out to unbelievably comfy. Made of a soft feel, recycled polyester mix. The embroidered logos won’t fade or peel. That high collar is gert lush. Also available in pale grey and a most excellent deep green.

Galibier Atlantic Winter Hat

Another item from Galibier that was rather perplexing until it was tried on, whereupon it was not removed. We don’t think it would fit under a helmet. It’s just for chilling in the chill. “High stretch, air trapping design” made from merino wool (outer) and fleece (lining). Also available in smurf turquoise.

Galibier Colombièr & Liberté glasses

  • Price: £49.00-£64.00 Colombier, £55.00-£65.00 Liberté
  • From: Galibier

The Colombier (white frame) are basically road glasses, the Liberte (frameless) are off-road. Although there’s nothing stopping you wearing the Colombier for a spot of mountain biking, or dropbarring with the Liberte. The Colombier options: Matt Black Frame with Smoke lens,Matt White Frame with Purple/green Plasma lens (shown) and Crystal Frame with Photochromic lens. The Liberte options: Matt Black Frame with Photochromic lens (shown), Crystal Black Frame with High Contrast Plasma lens and Crystal Black frame with Teal Plasma Lens.

What is Fresh Goods Friday?

It’s Singletrack’s long running, weekly roundup of all of the new products that have been sent in to the magazine.

Where do all of the goods come from?

They’re sent in by bike companies and marketing agencies

What happens to all of the products?

They’re featured and then some are reviewed down the line in either Singletrack Magazine or in online reviews and photoshoots.

What happens to them when you’ve finished with them?

They’re usually sent back after review, or kept on long-term test bikes. But no one ever asks for shorts and shoes back. Trust us on that. Once we were asked to return some brake pads.

I’m a company making the next big thing. How much does it cost to feature in FGF?

Nothing. Nil. Zero. Diddlysquat. Sod all. Just send all ‘next big things’ to us at – Fresh Goods Friday, Singletrack Magazine, Lockside Mill, Dale Street, Todmorden. OL14 5PX. Please note that if you require the products back after they have featured then you are responsible for arranging collection at your cost. While it is our policy to feature everything we receive in FGF if we decide your product is not suitable for publication we won’t do it. Publication is at our discretion. Whether a product goes on for publication as a review is at editorial discretion. Beer, coffee & spirits will ALWAYS be tested.

Orange Switch 6er. Stif Squatcher. Schwalbe Magic Mary Purple Addix front. Maxxis DHR II 3C MaxxTerra rear. Coil fan. Ebikes are not evil. I have been a writer for nigh on 20 years, a photographer for 25 years and a mountain biker for 30 years. I have written countless magazine and website features and route guides for the UK mountain bike press, most notably for the esteemed and highly regarded Singletrackworld. Although I am a Lancastrian, I freely admit that West Yorkshire is my favourite place to ride. Rarely a week goes by without me riding and exploring the South Pennines.

Agree that knee length waterproof socks under waterproof trousers are the answer for cold wet winter riding. Untouchable.

As for Exposure, after, what, 20yrs years of pissing about with increasingly expensive alternatives that invariably had multiple compromises or failure points and very poor after care, finally bought a Six Pack earlier this year (outlet + members discount made it A LOT more reasonable). it is brilliant in every respect. Job jobbed.

However, IMHO wide beam spread on a helmet light is a waste, i sold my Diablo because of that. I don’t need a dim wide beam on my head, I need a tight spot for looking round corners etc. Four4th scorch is not as great in many ways, but the beam is more useful.
