Spot The Suspension – probably our hardest quiz yet!

by 35

Maybe this time we’ve actually beaten you. Surely this is too hard? Can anyone get more than 20 right?!

Phil from Kinematic Bike did a whole pile of sketch studies while he was working on the design for his Coyote FSt (be sure to check out the bike check!). He’s kindly let us use his diagrams for this quiz. Good luck!

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.

I was hoping for URT, least that way I’d have been able to recognise one of them.

    14 here with a lot of guessing…

It wouldn’t help me in the slightest, as I’m not obsessive enough to know one brand from another to that extent……but….a key to what triangle, square, circle and circle with a cross in actually mean might help. Or is this one of those things where if you know you know; and if you don’t know best you leave it to others….

I’m trying to work out which bikes some of them relate to. The faux bar Specialized and Trek in particular. Trek have been on the concentric rear axle/pivot for about 15 years and Horst link is Specializeds thing if they’re not just using flex stays.

Square is the rear axle, circles are pivots, Circles with crosses in are attached to the frame, Triangles indicate either end of the shock, and arrows indicate the directions of movement or rotation.

    15…. not too bad?

    Couldn’t get one!

I think it’s because we don’t actually favour full suspension bikes as they have lots of bits you don’t need which need to be  maintained.

    Each to their own.

That was tough, 18/23. Probably could have more than one answer for a couple of them, especially Specialized who’ve had so many suspension designs over the years.

    9, got the obvious ones.

13 missed the trek because the abp isn’t very clearly drawn

    17. Agree on the Trek as that’s what made me put something else.

Also, is number 1 a specialized with a seatstay pivot?

    No Maverick.

@seadog101: STW is definately racist against Litevilles, have noticed that over the years!

    @chickenman

    Not ment to be!

If I was wanting a FS bike, they’re what I’d be buying. Look nice and the engineering of the design is sound.

Another 18 here – enjoyed that one, although putting in that Jamis thing was mean

As my bikes are…road/CX/hardtail/rigid SS this little quiz is a bit irrelevant (to me).

    13. I knew two (and still managed to get one of them wrong). Inspired guesswork, should probably buy a lottery ticket

13, recognised some, most of the rest I guessed at not really enough of a geek to even know who ‘Forbidden’ even are TBH…

    Where’s the hardtail?

There are 2 Specialized designs with a seatstay pivot just above the dropout (rather than Horst link) – what bikes are those? Or are they meant to replicate a flex stay?

I got 15 which amazes me as I guessed at least half and expected to get fewer than average. Maybe I have been reading too many MTB websites after all.

16 – had a brain fart towards the end.

Great quiz! 15/23 for me. I really forgot how many Specialized variations there were.
The only ones I was 100% on were Knolly, Yeti and Propain 🙂

I got the trek but the diagram is wrong for the rear axle / pivot.
