I’ve been asked to be best man by someone who I don’t really like and I didn’t think liked me much either. I can’t see myself doing it. Has anyone ever declined the oppertunity to be best man?

shouldnt you find out what the bridesmaids look like before declining?

I don’t know why he asked me, nor does anyone else who knows us. I told my girlfriend and she said he must be desperate, perhaps he asked other people first and they turned him down. I would make a crap best man, I’m boring disorganised and unreliable, I’ve quit smoking and drinking too.

How long since he asked you? If its today, then you still have the chance to lie convincingly, if not you’ve lost your window of oppertunity.

Grow some and tell him no. When he asks why just tell him you don’t like him.

If you do end up doing it, make sure your speach includes the following…

“Usually the bestman speach includes a bit about how the groom is a great guy…well I don’t particularly like him so this bit was a challenge.”

He emailed to ask me, the email was sent 2 days ago but like I said I’m disorganised and unreliable, I didn’t open my email inbox till this morning.

I would suggest that you develop a phobia about public speaking.

just say: “no thanks mate, I’m too disorganised… and I hate giving speeches”

Thanks for the laughs everyone. I emailed him back saying I didn’t want to do it as we don’t really see eye to eye, I suggested his brother as a more suitable best man. He replied, his brother said no, as did 4 other people so I’m 6th in line to decline.

tell him you don’t think it would be approprate after you had that affair with his wife, she got pregnant, wasn’t sure if the kid was yours or his so aborted. “gosh, really, you mean she never mentioned it?”

this has the benefit that he’ll probably never speak to you again and is pretty unlikely to ask you to best man at the next wedding (which probably isn’t that far away if you do tell him)
