Worn Stanchions, how bad?

I recently had my Fox 32's serviced and was told by the shop that my Stanchions were worn and I should replace my forks.

I don't do much heavy riding, but the forks took a beating in the TransRockies.

What will happen if I just carry on riding them?

I don't have them serviced often as there is nowhere to service them here, I'm going to learn how to do it myself but am wondering if the shop were just trying to sell me a pair of forks, their sale started the next day and they had some deals on forks.

I was told my Vanillas had some stantion wear, but it was £120 to replace them so I was advised to just run them untill they die..they survived another 4 years or so, I'm just replacing them now.

if they're already dead, no harm can come from running them some more. If they're Vanilla, it will not effect the spring, if they're float, the air spring is inside the stanchion so you're fine. I'd say run them. The worse that can happen is that they get really really rough.

gah, you lot are crap.

I thought I would have to replace them. With some nice new shiney ones. You know especially if they were dangerous to ride as they are or something.

i've just replaced my upper tube assy as they were bilging oil past the dust wipers via the worn (rough to touch) stanchion. If oil gets out, then dirt and crap can get in... which will accelerate the wear on the bushings, and make the fork notchy and wear very quickly (it's happened to me in the past with Pace and Rock Shox forks). I've only had mine a year so thought 120 quid on new csa is worth it because I like the way it works and new forks are chuffin expensive now! I installed it myself to save another hundred quid - took about 3.5 hours all told spread over two nights to strip, clean and reassemble. simple, but there's just a lot to do!

taking the lowers off to properly clean the seals is quick and easy to do - there's a video on the fox website.

But grumm, those are rock shox showing stanchion wear... it onyl happens to Fox forks so I'm calling photoshop

For what it's worth, mine don't suffer but I checked with Mojo at the Brechfa enduro and my regular method of cleaning dried mud off and a drop of wet lube on the stanchions and pump/wipe was approved of and seems to work.
