    I would like it to be able ;

Load other people’s routes on to it and then follow them with clear directions GPX file ?
    Display routes I have mapped
    Display the loaded routes over OS maps 1:50 000 ? 1.2500 ?
Be able to use it for walking as well as bikiing along side a backup paper map
    Have bike mount
    Calculate distance travelled / milometer

In summary a reliable device I can use to explore new areas with clear on the ground mapping and directions, to avoid having to stop and consult the map at every junction possible crossing

    Don’t need HRM etc etc

Have used search on here but just throws up loads which I can’t get a clear from on which would be best.

    Thanks for any help

Check out Satmap as well. It isn’t tiny, but rugged, has a great big screen and is pretty easy to use. Top piece of kit.

Have a look at the Bryton rider 50. Looks smaller than the garmin above but it mounts to the bars for easy viewing. Doesn’t have OS maps but it has OCM which is quite good. GPX maps work on it fin.

I use this software with my Etrex.

    Mobac

The current version 1.9 does not let you download OS maps but if you can get version 1.8 you get use OS maps. It is available on the web.

There are instructions for the transfer here link

Use a Ram mount to put it on your bike.

Loads of stuff on using Garmins for road bikes here GPS

Another Satmap user here. I use it for walking and riding great piece of kit, mines 3 1/2 years old now and has worked flawlessly in that time.

Does this Garmin Etrex 20 work well on the bike?

It works fine on the bike but is a little bigger than the Edge type units.

If you get the next model up, the Etrex 30, you can add heart rate and cadence sensors.

Garmin Dekota 10 or 20, plus you can get a handle bar mount for them.
