Cos I had the time, I thought I'd compare the wheel (without cassette or tyre) weights of my XC wheels and my road bike wheels and the road bike ones came up heavier by 50g for the rear wheel. Now the XC wheels are Mavic 717 on Hope XC, so top of the range pretty much, whereas the road wheels are Specialized hubs on Mavic Open Pro for a Specialized Allez Elite, which is mid-range, so maybe this shouldn't be a suprise, but I was expecting my road wheels to be lighter.

A bit geeky I know, but are the wheel weights for a given quality of bike the same MTB vs road or would road normally be lighter?

why would road wheels be lighter? they are bigger, longer spokes, the circumference is bigger (more Aluminium)

My road wheels are lighter but they are carbon rims, carbon hubs and carbon/kevlar spoked whilst my mtb wheels are just XTR 😳

My training winter wheels are 1800grams-ish Bonti select.

I think my XTR 719s are lighter but the road wheels do their job nicely.

My £500 bonti wheels are lighter around 1500g but also used on Crossers.

I think the best weight reduction I can do is diet lol
