I'm after a new hard tail and was all set on a Santos SCC03, but after reading this thread I'm back to square one. All the bikes suggested look lovely esp. the On one Scandal. 29-ers are out of the equation to that makes my life a bit simpler.

It appears that I have a bit of test riding to do…which is a great way to spend the summer.

38cm equates to 14"
No 14 X 2.54 = 35.56cm

My old Scandal was a great all-day bike, you'd expect it to be stiff but it wasn't so very different from my Soul on that front. Though I've heard the new non-scandium model is stiffer, mine was the older one. Didn't really get on with the bike that well but only because I was asking it to do something it didn't want to do (ie, be a 130mm trail bike like my Soul)
