so friend crashed the other week and cut open his arm. Realised that I didn't have anything (except a foil blanket and a whistle). I had one left over tissue to do some basic cleaning up of the wound, however he ended up in A&E having stitches. it got me thinking what first aid kit should I be carrying for day rides/when we go to the Alps? I know I don't know needles and complex stuff, but there seem to be so many out there? What stuff do you carry? I was thinking a smallish one with some gauzes, tape to cover a wound, sling? That would be sufficient? what do you reckon? Thanks guys.

What first aid kit?

A couple of largish wound dressings, saline solution in squirty tubes, cling film for dressings and immobilising broken bits, melonin and micropore.
With that lot you can treat bleeding stuff, clean stuff and immobilise stuff. That's first aid.Posted 1 year ago # -
This will pretty much cover it then?
Posted 1 year ago # -
I've got one of those. Bumped it up a bit with some bigger dressings, steri strips and piriton tablets
Posted 1 year ago # -
I'd add into that some eye wash amphule, a couple of large triangular bandages, a spare battery for your mobile and a bundle of zip ties
Posted 1 year ago # -
Oh and some steri strips and a needle and thread.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Needle I'm not doing any DIY elbow or knee wounds
Right I shall get it going..soon it'll be as big as my Camelbak!!

Superglue & duct tape in there somewhere.

triangular bandages, Tampons and some tape should be enough to stop most bleeding. unless they sever their femoral on a tree or something. for breaks and dislocations, immobilisation is the priority and having a bundle of traingular bangaged and non-stretchy rolled crepe bandages will doo in most cases.

Excellent advice there

I wouldn't buy a kit, there is usually loads of stuff you don't need. A big Boots should have all the individual bits you should need. And bung it in a small drybag.
Forgot to add a rescusi-aid...it's something I never want to do but if I must I'd rather not have to rescue breath into someone's mouth without protection. And gloves...keep them at the top so they are the first thing you get to...makes you wear them!
Pencil and paper useful for keeping notes if you are observing an unconcious casualty. And a practical based first aid course could be a lifesaver! Something like a REC course is more geared to first aid in the wild...

I'm happy with the giving first aid, being a copper we have enough training, it was more what products as you could end up with loads, ust thining what the key bits are! Thanks guys. Something to get up and running.

Lister covered what I would take. Would like to add to that an on call Sea King helicopter, very popular first aid item at trail centres.

Duct tape and a clean hankie. The rest is superfluous.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Not sure it will fit in my Camelbak though?
Posted 1 year ago # -
I just carry one of these at all times, not used it yet for 1st aid, the last guy who I thought needed my help got up and was able to run
Posted 1 year ago # -
Yeah don't think I'll be carrying that! What is is a hunting/fishing knife or something!!??

LOL @ uplink

Uplink is perhaps being a little bit enthusiastic but he is right.
A sharp pair of scissors or knife (small) is dead handy for turning things into dressings or slings or what ever.
Aspirin, brufen, paracetamol, water sterilizing, glucose tablets maybe worth consideringPosted 1 year ago # -

Better add some Quik-Clot as well just in case then, can never be too prepared...

innertubes are great for making a sling.

Tehre is only a very limited range of injuries where you can actually make a difference. Minor injuries don't stop the ride, major ones need the professionals.
would you have been happy doing a repair on your friend? if so carry the stuff to do it. if not don't.
I carry a fairly comprehensive kit when I do - But I know how to apply sterisrtips and so on. Be vary aware of the legal issues when giving people drugs
Most stuff can be improvised anyway.
My Kit.
A variety of dressings - film and hydrocolloid and conventional
Steristrips,
bandage.

I use http://www.roughrideguide.co.uk/1st-Aid.html

Lifesystems are probably the best first aid kit money can buy.
Posted 1 year ago # -
keep an eye out on Aldi/Lidl , they regularly have a reasonable first aid kit in for around a fiver containing,
Sterile dressing
Burn dressing
Elastic bandages
Children's plasters
Plaster strips
Sensitive adhesive bandage
Tweezers
Fingertip plasters
Disinfectant wipes
Disposable gloves
Safety pins
Scissors
Blister plasters
Information booklet
i keep one for the car and another in my back pack.Posted 1 year ago # -
Oh yeah we have a Lidl I'll keep an eye out, I was thinking I should probably carry one in my car too. Thanks.

This is pretty good for emergencies. You need a GPS and mobile phone.
You need to set it up well before the ride by sending a responsible person the link (mom, dad, partner for eg) and explaining what it does and why they might be needing it.
If things go horribly wrong out in the hills and you cant move you can text/phone them with the the GPS coordinate and they can use this to pinpoint where you are and send in the troops. Enter the lat long in bit that says "Show Point from Latitude and Longitude"
You might need to reconfigure your GPS to the right position format.
This is assuming most people don't carry proper maps or file a flight plan.
