Oh gawd. I was hoping this would be a “good film”, in it’s own right. I don’t like Star Wars, but 2 people want me to take them to see this… I’m going to sit there for 2+ hours hating it aren’t I?!

Which was backed up by what she saw in the cave, it was something she had clung on to for her entire childhood which she now needed to let go. Luke talked about his hubris in thinking that the force belonged to the Jedi when it can be in anyone, and it was finally reinforced by the slave child at the end.

It’s also been in the other films that the force can be in anyone, it’s been consistent through out.

Maybe Rey’s a droid, it’s a Star Wars / Blade Runner crossover set up. Just a thought.

Picking up on Snoke, it would be good to see him and the now “dead” Luke face off against each other in another realm.. in a ghostly Jedi world.. could affect the current realm where there’s an interplay between the mythical and the real..and let’s see who “feels” it.

What a god awful movie. Basic generic sci-fy story, poor script, worse acting and a story that jumps about more than a kangaroo.

As with anything on this scale there are gaps and holes people desperately want to fill. Perhaps we will get a Rey I’m your brothers uncle in the next one or she is just some kid who got lucky.

Surely it can’t be anywhere near as bad as episodes one and two? Those things were bad to start with and have aged so badly that they look like Sci-fy channel offerings.

Pity about Snoke, seemed like an interesting character. A bit like Darth Maul. Maybe all interesting bad guys have to be cut in half for some reason

Right late to the party thanks to life but as per the above really.
I know where Disney are trying to come from,trying to make it new for the next generation but so much of this and the Force Awakens just feels like copy paste from the first 6 films.
Force awakens ?< well this felt like an old pair of slippers just enough for those who loved 4-5-6 and just enough to grab the attention of new Star wars watchers. The last Jedi for me was more of the same felt like a poor Empire with almost the same references, a lost cause ,a mentoring Jedi master (Luke not Yoda). The opening escape ok old B wing type bombers not a big giant boob nipple gun.Trying to out run star destroyers and being caught out by a Del toro akin to being caught out by Boba Fett…

There were some ok bits ..the fight scene after Snokes momentary lapse in force ability not to here the saber turning and getting kebab-ed.

The light jump was quite good. As was Luke force projection ending at Echo base/ New same ice planet with magic flying rocks hmmm…

Lukes X wing under the water was a nice touch.
After that im almost at a loss to find good in the film.The whole floating in space Mary Poppins scene had me cringing as did the casino and space donkey escape. No Snoke back story who where why ? I really wanted it to be as dark as Empire but sadly some iffy one liners and BB8 cuddles spoiled it. Empire was one of my all time favorite films and the Rouge One came along and topped it , I had high hopes for The last Jedi, which is a shame really.

Struggling to give it a 5 out of 10 maybe a second watch on dvd in 6 months time might make me have a change of heart.. and thats only really for Mark Hamill’s acting.

Went in with low expectations. Still disappointed.

Can anyone tell me the point of the film? Or the point of the force awakens? Or how we go from the fall of the empire in rotj to losing all of it to a tiny faction in the force awakens?

I read the Vox link, it made some interesting points, but it reminded me of when Ghostbusters got bad reviews and they bleated that it was because of the all-female cast.

I can understand it’s wrenching for older, Die-Hard fans of the original, some of its messages are ‘Jedis aren’t that special’ ‘heritage doesn’t count for shit’ and being heroic is stupid. Okay, that’s very different to the originals, but more than that it tries to kill their real-world legacy too – the influx of Earth terminology “laser sword” “Godspeed” goes against the whole “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” theme of the originals. It seems they wanted to encourage lots of new fans, by proving that it’s “not all that stuff your Dad keeps going on about”.

OK just back from watching TLJ. I can see a pattern emerging. TFA was a turgid remake of A New Hope, Rogue 1 brilliant “Guys on a mission” film, TLJ turgid remake of the start of The Empire Strikes Back. Hopefully the new Han Solo movie next year will be great.

So what did the rebels accomplish in TLJ? Two star destroyers destroyed at a cost of about 98% casualties. Hero Finn and his new sidekick spend half the film on a failed mission that moved the plot on not one iota. He couldn’t even get his own suicide mission right. Po Dameron is no new Han Solo. Again everything he touched turned to sh!t.

Finally, someone realises that ultimate destruction can simply be achieved by crashing something the size of a cross channel ferry at near light speed into your target- no need for Death Stars. Presumably starships capable of hyperdrive would have an autopilot which would have made Laura Dern’s suicide mission unnecessary.

And Adam Driver is still the wettest villain in the history of cinema.

Anakin Skywalker was a nobody to begin with, was he not? So although they managed 6 films about the Skywalker family (with the other 3 making a mention of them as well), so Rey isn’t far off…

There’s a Bladerunner 2039? I must have missed that. However, Bladerunner 2049 was excellent.

I’ve yet to see the latest Star Wars so I’ll reserve judgment until tonight.

For the record: I’m no Star Wars fanboi and thought the last film was average at best.

I thought Bladerunner was great and woke up the next day thinking a Dennis Villeneuve standalone Star Wars movie would be excellent.

Still annoyed by TLJ though, and it’s not because of the Porgs neither.

Go on, I’ll say it; For all it’s many flaws, I preferred The Phantom Menace to TLJ because of exactly that; it was fun. TLJ was just dull.

@anagallis, I went with my two sons (10 & 12) because for me the most fun thing about these new SW movies is seeing them in the cinema with them / through their eyes. The 12 year old gave it 7/10 and the 10 year old says it’s his best star wars movie ever. And they have seen all the star wars movies many times. So what do I know with my cynicism?? Your kid(s) will probably love it.
