Is north Brittany better than south Brittany?

Taking the family there, a 4 and a 1 year.

    What’s it like for beaches?

Anyone know of any good camp sites?

    It’s not as interesting imo.

It’s beaches, rocks, and mud. Quite dull 🙂

Wonderful seafood and more Muscadet (Nantaise) than you can shake a stick at…

North is different to South. North more akin to Welsh or Scottish coast (but warmer), South more like English south coast, usually warmer again. Some nice beach resorts either side though. On the north coast there is a great place at Perros-Guirec, and nice sites at val-Andre and eastwards along to La Motte. South, plenty around Carnac to Concarnau. BRILLIANT BEACHES, oops. Not been to western end yet myself, but will get round to it one day.

    druidh,

I agree, but do you know anything about the region in the north west of France called Brittany?

Ton pointed me in the direction of Carnac too. We camped a stone’s throw from the beach and the countryside nearby was lovely for walking or cycle touring the stone circles/menhirs.

http://www.sunelia.com/en/index.html are both good campsite chains with excellent facilities for kids,Yelloh slightly more upmarket than Sunelia. Both have excellent websites and it’s cheaper to book direct online, and sort out your own ferry, than use people like French Life.I like Benodet, which has good beaches, and has a Sunelia site at Pointe St-Gilles,about 600m from town, and 100m from a nice beach.I also like Perros-guirec Which has a lovely Yelloh site called Le Ranolien. The nearest beach to the site is ok,but there is a lovely oneat Trestraou about 800m along the coastal path.HTH

Can’t recommend St, Cast highly enough, great beaches, nice town, friendly locals and only half an hours drive from St. Malo. Great kids clubs at Camping le Chatalet and beautiful views over the bay and take the bike as there is a great coastal route

    Someone off here recommended

but they were fully booked (a good sign, surely)

    We stayed at

    http://uk.lesmenhirs.com/

which was at the south end of the beach, about 10 mins walk from the busy end of the town centre.

p.s. get lots of the Breton cidre – it’s wonderful.

Stayed here last summer – its in the west.

Nice site, well run, no pool, close to a beach but this is less child friendly than it looks – shelves a bit. Nice coastal paths. We drove to a large beach at the end of the the peninsula called Bay de Trespass – next to Pointe de Raz. You would probably not want to camp here as its quite exposed but the beach is fantastic for swimming, boarding plus has life guards. Decent cycling from the site either along the coastal path (cheeky and challenging) or around the peninsula (with some singletrack).

That said the weather was indifferent – this would be the same at Quimper and Carnac. It was great when he sun came out and things warmed up but the cloudy drizzle eventually gave way to full on downpour so we drove a few hundred miles up the Loire valley in order to escape and dry out the canvas.

This year we are going further south in search of a better climate.

Scholarsgate we went to the same campsite 2 years in a row at Guilvenec(run by Yellohcamping now). Short walk(800m) to an excellent beach(gently shelving/no waves) and a 10 minute drive to the beach at Pointe de Raz(not really suitable for small kids as the rip current is ferocious, 3 lifeguards constantly in the shallows in the space of 50m!).

Quiberon peninsula has lovely beaches, lighhouses and great campsites. Take ferry to Belle Ile on a day trip. Quiet and very beutifull. Can hire bikes.
Standing stones at Carnac another great place.
La Baul further south is a bit more commercial. Beaches are stunning.
St Nazaire has old underground submarine pens from WW2 which make a brill day out amazing feels like a set from a Bond Movie!

I’m going back next year with the Caravan.
