    Morning all

Are shimano gear cables for road / mountain bikes compatible?

The cable to the rear mech broke on my road bike this morning (105 shifters / rear mech), I was wondering if the XTR gear cables I have in the garage at home will fit or if I need to buy a set of 105 cables

    Cheers

They are indeed compatible: I think only some campagnolo shifters take a different fitting. (It's brake cables that are diferent between road and mtb levers, and they often come 'double ended' so you cut off the end you don't need.)

I think you'll be fine with the gear cables, it's the brake cables on road levers that differ from those for MTB levers.

XTR cable is just Shimano SP41 IIRC
Which is what I use for all my bikes [inc a 105'd road bike]
