HP would also be one of my faves along with Balvenie, Glenfiddich and Glengoyne

Not sure what happened to the image...lets try again. This is currently on offer at Sainsbury's down from £20 > £15...I doubt you'll find a better dram for the price. Very drinkable, smells a bit of pear drops and tastes of oranges.
Won a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge (blind tasting) and won a Whisky of the Year award in Jim Murray's 'Bible'.

All the Hypermarche's are doing deals it seems. I popped into my local Co-op to get some milk and walking back through the Spirits section reveiled a whole host of Single Malts for under £25.00, so I bought three bottles of 15year old Glenlivet..
Phnarr phnarrAnd I love Laproaig me, the older the better, but the 10yr olds good enough.
I once went on a West Coast sailing trip with an old old buddy of mine, we ended up on Aaran in a storm (hooo hum) and got horribly drunk from a couple of bottles of this:

seconded, that'll be my christmas treat to me and short of quinta ruban for £25, that's the OP's question answeredLaphroaig is the only malt I actually like as opposed to apparent opinion here so far.
- it's pretty much the marmite of whiskies. If you like whisky, you have to try it because EVERYONE has to have an opinion on it.Any I've ever tried has always tasted like deisel
Never having tasted deisel (or diesel for that matter), I'm not qualified to comment. If you have, good on you, I bet your mates were impressedPosted 5 months ago # -
Old Pulteney is a current favourite of mine. It tastes like the sea, but without the jonnies and shite in it. It's the northern most distillery on the mainland and has a complex taste, a bit sweet, and is nowt like laphroig.
Agree... if you like HP then the Old Pulteney is a must to try. For more of a peppery hit try Talisker.
For smooth get a Dalwhinnie... it's next to Laggan so think of trails as you enjoy

I think you would like Dalwhinnie 15yo, Glenmorangie 10yo and give Bowmore 12yo a try if you want to try a more accessible Islay than Laphroig.
Dalwhinnie is a cut above and £25 would be a good price to pick that up for, the other two I have recently got for £20.

Never tasted Diesel either, at a guess it probably wouldn't sit in the light and delicate section of the flavour map!
Currenlly I'm liking Caol Ila.
I've not found a malt I've not enjoyed though and there are some great bargains out there at the moment. Jura Superstition for £20 in Tesco, Ardmore for £22 in Morrisons

perhaps this will be an unpopular choice considering the amount of single malts of show here, but if you like the idea of the Islay Whiskys but dislike the big iodine taste, then try out some black bottle, a blend from 7 of the Islay distilleries, all of the character with none of the medicinal after taste. And a damn fine dram, that stands up with the single malts.
oh aye, you should be able to buy it for around £15

I'll have a double (post that is)

Funny, I thought Old Pulteney was one of the most disagreeable whiskies I have ever tried. Just seemed harsh and out of balance.
Are those of you who like it smokers I wonder?

Go directly to Tesco, do not pass Go, etc. It's rude to leave that on the shelf.

And I love Laproaig me, the older the better, but the 10yr olds good enough.
I have a bottle of single cask 16 yo at cask strength. That is a man's drink...

I'm not convinced that peated whisky ages as well as non peated. Some of the most enjoyable peated's I have tried have been young and the older ones disapointing... but I'm happy to be persuaded otherwise. I do like a nice session of tasting loads of different whiskys.

Benromach is in the budget ballpark, and a nice dram.
Posted 5 months ago # -
Of the cheaper whiskies that often turn up under £20, Aberlour, Glen Moray and the Aldi single malts are all quite good.

If you like Highland Park try anything from the North East including Speyside, see what your local supermarket has on offer (Sainsburies had a lovely Glenlivet French cask for 20 squids, now they have a Talisker but that's probably not quite right if you don't like the smoky stuff). If you want to acquire a taste for west coast malts try the Caol Ila - it's like honey, mmmm. An Aberlour 10 year old is a good next step after Highland Park (similar price, and takes you into Speyside).

I'd happily invite you - I even have some Tasmanian, and shock-horror, the English one too.
But, you'll have to come to Adeaide!

I used to like a dram of Lagavulin but find it a bit too smoky and peaty now, Speyside is a lovely drop, made from the crystal clear waters of the River Tromie (so the website says)

Royal lochnagar is nice if u prefer light and fruity...also a great tour if u are ever near the distillery...I also love laphroig..it's beautifully medicinal...anyone here tried Springbank ? Worth a try if u see it. Gave me a spectacular headache after an enthusiastic local tasting...and diesel ? Get yourself down my local, the cider bar in newton abbot...three pints of diesel and your anyone's.

Glengoyne 12 for me.

Not read the whole thread but I was in my local co-op earlier getting lunch and they've just reduced Glenmorangie to £20 a bottle, thats a fantastic price for a great whisky.

I am definately no expert, just pretty experienced & IMO there is a lot of boll0x waffled on here about whisky!
For a start there are hundreds of malts out there, lots of which you'll like, lots you may not like (as much).
I must have strange taste buds because I have never yet tasted a malt that I 'don't like'. Some I prefer more than others, but thats where it ends. It's all down to taste.
Go to your local supermarket, see whats on offer (ie reduced!) & try.
I like everything from Laphroig to Dalwhinnie, I brought 7 bottles back from Islay & loved every one with a Caol Isla distillers edition being my fave.
I don't think anyone can 'recommend' something thats taste orientated TBH, one mans meat is another mans poison!Posted 5 months ago # -
Dalwhinnie all the way, described by Loch Fyne whiskies as exotic white lingerie

Some of the most enjoyable peated's I have tried have been young and the older ones disapointing..
Interesting. Me and my mate each bought a bottle of '97 6yo Ardbeg "Very Young" (cask strength) when it first became available, for about £35 each. We quaffed all of his and describe it as "Whisky with an ASBO".
I have my bottle squirrelled away waiting for global stocks run out so I can flog it for a massive profit. Currently selling for £300-£400... When it hits a £1000 I'm selling it to buy a new bike

@esselgruntfuttock - recommendations were largely based on similarity to a whisky he said he liked. Stop spouting boll0x yourself.
Of course, it's more just general chatter now.
*off to the shop*

Give Old Pulteney a go. between £18-30 depending on who has what offer on.

+1 for Balvenie Doublewood
Posted 5 months ago # -
its spelt Caol Ila, i agree that its all down to personal taste. i work for Diagio and have tried my fare share and i have not found a whiskey that i can drink without pulling funny faces.

Balvenie Doublewood v nice, love Springbank personally - more a summer drink as v light end quite a delicate flavour.
Only one i reall struggle with now is Ardbeg, used to love it, can;t drink it now without a monster hangover.Posted 5 months ago # -
Lidl do a nice peaty highland malt. Bit like a bargain Highland Park (my fave).
Posted 5 months ago # -
Don't think I'm spouting boll0x Gordy, soz if you thought so.
its spelt Caol Ila, I know, dunno why I spelt it like I did!
It's pronounced 'Cul Eela' & Bunnahabhain is pronounced 'BoonaHaVen'Posted 5 months ago # -
Apologies on the double old pulteney tip off. I agree the Aberlour is a nice dabble too. My old man is well into the whisky and had a huge collection. What I did learn was that the whisky needs to be warm and not iced. It can effect the flavour. Also just try em.

Highly recommend ferry tastings. The only drawback is that it tends to be next to the perfume counter.
Love peatiness, but currently on the very sweet, sherried Glenfarclas 12 yo
Posted 5 months ago # -
If you like Highland Park, try "Scapa" the other Orkney whiskey.
I think its a bit more than £25 mind, but well worth it!
